Plattsburgh State clinches playoff berth

POTSDAM — The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team accomplished two important tasks Friday — win its first SUNY Athletic Conference road game and, most importantly, clinched a playoff spot.

Kathleen Payne scored 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds to lead the Cardinals over Potsdam, 64-56.

"It wasn't a pretty game, but sometimes you have to take a win in those ugly ones," Plattsburgh coach Cheryl Cole said. "Potsdam had their back against the wall and they played with a lot of passion and intensity, and outworked us on the boards."

The Bears (4-18, 2-14) held a rebounding advantage of 57-43 over the Cardinals (9-12, 6-9).

Brittany Marshall chipped in with 11 points for Plattsburgh while Yazmin Lewis and Dana Nucaro each finished with nine points.

Kaley Arsenault and Jessica Kouzan each led the way for Potsdam with 11 points. Sophie Parks chipped in with nine points. All three players finished with eight rebounds while Bailey Weigel pulled down 13.

"It was like a day at work," Cole said. "We just didn't have a lot of energy or intensity. But, it was enough to get the job done.

"We did not rebound well. Potsdam is not known for its rebounding, but New Paltz is. We really aver to work on that the next couple days at practice."

The Cardinals wrap up their home schedule on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game against New Paltz. Plattsburgh fell to the Hawks 75-61 in the early part of the season.

"It's our final home game and we need to be better," Cole said.

Payne needs nine points now to pass Donna Dixon's single-season scoring record of 422 points, and has three games to do so.

"She needs nine points and will hopefully be able to get that at home," Cole said. "She has been nursing an injury which as affected her play a bit.

"We didn't need her as much (Friday), but we will need her a lot more next week."
