Orange fend off Mountaineers

OLMSTEDVILLE — The top team in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference's Southern Division got a bit of a scare Monday, but Indian Lake/Long Lake was able to hold off a late charge from Minerva-Newcomb to secure a 32-26 victory in girls' basketball.

The 14th-ranked Orange had gained a 22-11 lead through three quarter, but the Mountaineers outscored them 15-10 in the fourth quarter, getting as close as three points.

Meg Smith led the charge for Indian Lake/Long Lake (13-2, 11-2) with 12 points. Morgan Hinckley added with points while Sydney Hinckley pulled down nine rebounds.

Gabriel McNally scored a team-high nine points for Minerva-Newcomb (6-6, 5-5). Makenzie Winslow finished with eight points.

KEENE VALLEY — Hannah Bruno scored 14 points and Serene Holland added 11 to lead the Warriors.

Willsboro (8-6, 6-5) built an 11-point lead after the first quarter and went into the half up 21-8.

Renee Marcotte and Kyli Swires each added eight points for the Warriors.

Tucker Geiger was the leading scorer for Keene (1-11, 1-10) with 10 points.

NORTH CREEK — Lindsey Reynolds scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to lift the Wildcats.

Kate Rose added 16 points for Schroon Lake (3-10, 3-9), which entered the half trailing 14-13.

The Wildcats outscored the Jaguars, 33-17, in the second half.

Mikayla Glode led Johnsburg (1-14, 1-12) with 13 points. Brooke Denno added seven, including one 3-pointer.

CVAC Saranac 43, NCCS 26

CHAMPLAIN — The Cougars opened Senior Night with a 7-4 lead in the first quarter.

But the Chiefs showed why they are ranked 14th in the state and still unbeaten.

Saranac (15-0, 12-0) outscored the Cougars 19-7 in the second quarter to take control.

Stephanie Linder led all scorers with 22 points, and Alisha Ducatte added 11 for the Chiefs. Morgan Maye had six points on two triples.

"Coach (Tim) Newell is doing a heck of a job," Northeastern Clinton coach Frank Dumas said. "His defense is tenacious. We had the lead after the quarter, but the second quarter is what broke the game open."

Seniors Paige Southwick and Justine Rabideau, along with Skyler Hebert, each scored six points for the Cougars (8-6, 8-4).
