Red Storm hold off Cougars

SARANAC LAKE — Bradley Shumway's third period goal proved to be the game-winner as Saranac Lake knocked off Northeastern Clinton, 4-2, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey Monday.

The Red Storm (10-7, 5-3) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Devin Darrah and Matt Phelan in the second period.

The Cougars, however, stormed back to tie the game with two goals in a matter of 21 seconds in the third period.

Zac Guay scored at the 1:18 mark to bring Northeastern Clinton within one. Ben Leduc then found the back of the net on an assist from Matt Letourneau at the 1:39 mark to tie the contest at two.

Shumway, though, tallied at the 5:56 mark to give Saranac Lake the lead for good on an assist from Phelan and Kyle Dora.

"We didn't panic after they came back to tie it," Red Storm coach Will Ellsworth said. "We held our composure to win the game."

Darrah tallied his second goal of the game at the 6:58 mark to give Saranac Lake a two-goal cushion.

Blake Darrah turned away 23 shots to pickup the victory for the Red Storm.

Kyle McCarthy made 14 saves in net for Northeastern Clinton.
