Summer volleyball sign-up tonight
SARANAC — Saranac will be hosting open gym for high school volleyball players with at least a year of experience from 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 29. At the open gym, there will be registration for team competition to be held July 6, 13, 20, 26, Aug. 3 and 10.
Cost is $20 and includes gym use, insurance and t-shirts. Players are encouraged to contact their high school coaches, and participating coaches include Vickie McMillan (PHS) Joanne Johnson (SCS), Lindsey Wilfore (Peru), Shana Hileman (BCS), Katrina Castine (NAC) and Brent Banker (NCCS).
McSweeney's/Mission of Hope tourney July 2
PLATTSBURGH — The McSweeney's/Mission of Hope Golf Tournament is slated for Friday, July 2 at The Barracks Golf Course at 12:30 p.m.
All of the proceeds of the tournament go directly to the Children Feeding Children Program, which provides a daily meal and multi-vitamin to 350 children in Nicaragua.
Individuals wishing to play can secure spots for their two-person team at the cost of $75 per player or $50 per member. Applications are available at The Barracks and Plattsburgh Discount Golf.

Brunell Memorial tourney July 24
ALTONA — The Second Annual Terry Brunell Memorial Tournament for Grasshopper boys, a double-elimination format until the last round, will be held on July 24 at Feinberg Park in Altona.
The first game will start at 9 a.m. The event is at no cost.
Raffle tickets, concessions and t-shirts will be on sale and are also available by pre-ordering to enter.

Volleyball Academy to begin July 12
BEEKMANTOWN — The 2010 Beekmantown Volleyball Academy and Junior Digger summer camps will be held in July with the middle school Jr. Digger Camp going July 12-15 from 9-11 a.m. The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, July 9. The Academy will be held July 19-23 and July 26-30, and weekly rates are available. Registration forms are posted on the BCS Web site under the athletics link. Bobsled track ceremony July 12
LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid's 1932 and 1980 Olympic bobsled track will officially become a part of the National Register of Historic Places during a plaque unveiling ceremony Monday, July 12. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on the deck of the Lamy Lodge.
The 1,537-meter long course has hosted five world championship races (1949, 1969, 1973, 1978, 1983) and one more Olympic event, in 1980. The 1949 Worlds also marked the first time a track outside of Europe had hosted that event.
Admission to the ceremony is free after 2 p.m. A guided tour will also begin at 2 p.m. Tour participants will be bused to the 1980 start to begin the one-hour walk up the 1932 piece of the track. Light hiking attire is suggested.
Also from 2-4 p.m., in celebration of the national historic registry, half-mile long wheeled bobsled rides on the 1932 and 1980 Olympic track will be available for $55 per person.

CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Athletics department is looking to fill positions for indoor track head coach, cross country head and assistant coaches and a modified volleyball coach.

Plattsburgh fighter wins in Rutland, Vt.
RUTLAND, Vt. — Frank Palumbo, a local Plattsburgh athlete, competed in the Kaged Kombat Mixed Martial Arts Fight-Night in Rutland, VT Saturday, June 26.
He faced Eddie Wood from Vermont Pride Fighters in the bout. Palumbo won the bout in the first round by submission. He has now won both of his amateur MMA bouts.
Palumbo's next MMA fight will be at the Burlington Brawl in Burlington, Vt. on Saturday, July 24.
