PLATTSBURGH — The defending playoff champion Fourth Ward Cardinals and Airborne Speedway Padres advanced to the Champlain Valley Baseball League semifinals with quarterfinal victories on Sunday.
The third-seeded Cardinals recorded an 11-6 win over the sixth-seeded Fourth Ward Timberjaxx, while the fourth-seeded Padres posted a 10-2 decision over the fifth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s.
The semifinals will be the best-of-three, with the Cardinals taking on the second-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners and the Padres opposing the top-seeded Meron’s Expos. The Cardinals and Padres will be the home teams for the nine-inning game this coming weekend.
Cardinals 11, Timberjaxx 6
PLATTSBURGH — Tory Bouyea rapped two doubles and drove in four runs as the Cardinals prevailed at Lefty Wilson Field.
C.J. Worley, Brian Latulipe and Craig Bujold added two hits each, with Bujold getting a double and two RBI and Worley two RBI.
Steve Burris went the distance for the pitching win as he struck out 12, allowed four hits and two earned runs.
It was a 2-all game when the Cardinals broke it open with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Worley’s two-run single gave the Cardinals the lead for good and Bouyea added a two-run double three batters later.
The Cardinals got a lift from four Clinton County Senior Mariners — Worley, Latulipe, Joe Tolosky and Tommy Curran.
Losing pitcher D.J. Barber accounted for half of the Timberjaxx’s hits with a double and single.

PLATTSBURGH — Winning pitcher Frank Brogna struck out five and allowed one run over seven innings to lead the Padres to their win.
The game was originally scheduled for Saranac High School, but was washed out in the bottom of the first inning and moved to South Acres Field.
Airborne Speedway held a 4-1 lead and then broke the game open with two runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth, three of the runs coming on Joey Painter’s home run to center.
Painter rapped a homer and single for the Padres, while Jeff Norton and Zach Myers added a double and single each.
Defensively, Airborne Speedway turned four double plays behind Brogna and reliever Painter, who went the final two innings. Matt Rivers played a strong game at shortstop.
David Latulipe and Jake Tolosky led the A’s with two singles each and Jake Richards added a RBI double. Joe Kirkpatrick was the losing pitcher.
