PLATTSBURGH — After beating a rival to take control of the ECAC West, Plattsburgh State will step out of conference play to meet a first-time opponent.

The Cardinals (12-1-1) host Norwich at Stafford Ice Arena tonight in the first matchup between the two programs.

Plattsburgh State, which swept RIT over the weekend to put itself in the driver's seat in the conference race, will try to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games. Stephanie Moberg leads the Cardinals with 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists), and Megan DiJulio notched two goals on the weekend to take over the team lead with 11. Kara Buehler's two assists against RIT gave her a team-best 12 for the season.

Norwich (11-2-3) stands second in the ECAC East and first in the conference among Division III teams. The Cadets, who are in their third season, fell to Manhattanville 7-0 in December but got payback with a 3-2 win Jan. 16. Their other loss came against UMASS Boston. They're coming off a win over Castleton on Saturday.

"Norwich is a good team, and a team that's beat some quality teams," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "They're a young team, and obviously they're going to look at this game as a chance to put themselves on the map.

"And we're coming off a tough weekend, so we've certainly gotta be ready to play. They're going to be a good team, and we just have to keep going."

Sophomore forward Julie Fortier paces Norwich with a 14-7-21 scoring line, and senior forward Sophie Leclerc has 17 points. Cindy Fortin and Chiara Traversa have shared goaltending responsibilities this season, although Fortin has played five of the six games this semester.

Houle said he doesn't know anything about the way the Cadets play. But the Cardinals may get pretty familiar with them — Houle said Norwich will become a regular on the schedule.

"We're going to play them in the future at least once a year, probably twice," he said. "They're a quality team."

Bowler Breaks Out
Senior forward Laurie Bowler was named ECAC West Player of the Week after recording her 100th career point on Friday and tallying a hat trick Saturday.

The Brantford, Ontario native scored four goals on the weekend after totaling five in her first 11 games. She's now tied for fifth on the team with 11 points.

"She struggled a bit scoring goals early this year, but she never stops working hard," Houle said. "She's a great leader. She's always positive no matter how she's playing or if she's scoring or not scoring.

"So I was real happy for her to have a big weekend like she did this weekend. She deserved it."

Goaltender Mandy Mackrell made the conference's Honor Roll. The junior had a career-high 32 saves on Friday and made 30 the next night.

Cards Move Up
Plattsburgh State switched spots with Elmira in this week's Division III poll. Amherst stayed on top after a midweek win over the Soaring Eagles, who slipped to No. 3.

Amherst is the only team that has beaten the Cardinals this season.
