Indians win girls' 'B' title

CHAMPLAIN — The Peru girls' tennis team got two wins in singles and swept the doubles to claim the Section VII Class B team championship over top-seeded Northeastern Clinton Tuesday.

Stephanie Omlin and Stephanie Demarais won singles matches for third-seeded Peru, and the teams of Abby Higgins and Samantha Banker and Margaret Mitchell and Katie Lawliss won in doubles.

"It was closer than the score might indicate," Peru coach James Neyenhouse said. "Each match was very close and we had to battle to earn every point we got."

Mitchell and Lawliss lost the first set, 6-3, to Northeastern Clinton's Lacie Hogle and Allie Cartier but came back to win two sets of 6-4.

"The No. 2 doubles were very tough," Neyenhouse said. "The girls from NCCS just continued to play hard ... But all season, Lawliss and Mitchell just keep focusing on what they need to, and it's paid off."

Tori Duprey recorded NCCS's lone match win at No. 3 singles.

Omlin won at No. 1 with two sets of 6-2, and Demarais took the No. 2 singles with sets of 7-5.

Higgins and Banker were victorious at No. 1 doubles with sets of 6-2 and 6-4.

Neyenhouse credited fellow coach Joseph Higgins for his work with the team.

"Coach Higgins has done a real good job all season working and reminding the girls about their form and techniques," Neyenhouse said."

Peru made it to the finals last year before falling to Saranac.
