Eagles, Patriots, Bobcats advance to states

PLATTSBURGH — The Beekmantown volleyball team wrapped up an unbeaten Section VII record by sweeping Peru in the Class B title game Saturday at Clinton Community College.

The Eagles head into NYSPHSAA competition with a 17-0 record, winning 51 sets and losing just two.

"Our record means nothing right now," Beekmantown coach Shana Fessette-Hileman said. "We're on a clean slate. We're ready. These girls are conditioned and mentally prepared."

Beekmantown will play the winner of Section X's Massena and Section II's Johnstown at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Plattsburgh State's Memorial Hall.

The Eagles defeated Peru by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20 to win their fourth sectional title in seven years.

"It was one of those that we had a feeling this game would go in five," Fessette-Hileman said. "We knew how good Peru is — they're a very consistent team and when you play against a consistent team in volleyball it puts a lot of pressure on you."

Kendra LaFountain played excellent defense for the Eagles and finished with 17 digs, one kill and an assist.

"She was able to get a touch on 90 percent of Peru's hits," Fessette-Hileman said.

Molly Sorrell tallied 11 points, four kills, an ace and two digs. Shannon Ryan had eight kills, three blocks, five points and two aces.

Kianna Archer added 22 assists, two kills, a block, an ace and six points out of the setter position.

Abby Higgins led Peru with six points, 11 kills, 15 digs and a block.

"We really focused on perfecting that first touch so we could set up an offense .. and speeding up our offense because we knew what a good blocker Abby Higgins is," Fessette-Hileman said. "We knew if we were able to speed up our game we hopefully would keep them in first gear, which we did."

Katie Lawliss added seven points and two kills, and Sam Banker had 12 assists for the Indians (14-4).

"Peru didn't give up and stayed into it the whole way," Fessette-Hileman said.
