NSL Division III All-Stars

Westport's McKinley, Minerva/Newcomb's Zatz capture MVP awards

The Schroon Lake boys' soccer team rolled through the Northern Soccer League this past season with a perfect 12-0 record.

The Wildcats captured the Division III regular-season title, but fell to Minerva/Newcomb in overtime in the Section VII Class D quarterfinals.

After such a successful season Schroon Lake was rewarded with four NSL Division III All Stars.

The Westport girls' team finished its season with a 10-2 record to capture Division III.

The Eagles season came to a close against eventual-state champion Chazy in the Class D semifinals.

Westport had also had four members of its squad land on the NSL Division III All-Star Team, including Most Valuable Player Willa McKinley.

The Mountaineers' Caio Zatz was chosen as the boys' MVP.

McKinley, a senior, powered the Eagles from the stopper position.

She controlled the flow of the game and was able to step in on defense when needed.

McKinley was a cocaptain and was a true leader on and off the field. Her teammates looked up to her and she always led by example. Her role was to keep a young team balanced and focused and she did that well.

Zatz, a sophomore, led the young Minerva/Newcomb team with 38 points on the season.

He tallied 18 goals and two assists as the Mountaineers went 8-3 on the season and upset undefeated Schroon Lake in the Class D quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals to Willsboro.

First team Boys

The Wildcats were led by a trio of seniors and one junior this season.

Matt Savarie, a senior, excelled at all positions this season. His ability to play anywhere gave Schroon Lake tremendous flexibility.

Savarie played an unselfish game this season and his team benefited from it. He finished the season with eight goals and a team-high 12 assists.

Matt Filler improved on his game during his senior season.

Filler provided the Wildcats with a legitimate scoring threat in the front and he capitalized on his chances. He led the team in scoring with 12 goals.

Ian Williams, a senior, was the perfect tandem with Filler up front.

Williams tallied nine goals on the season and dished out four assists.

Mitchell Beers, a junior, was a workhouse on defense for Schroon Lake.

Beers saw the field very well and always made the right play. He was the anchor and leader of a strong defensive unit.

Zatz's teammates, Dylan Saville and Wesley LaBar also earn first team recognition from Minerva-Newcomb.

Saville, a senior, was the Mountaineer netminder. He finished with 95 saves on the season and a pair of shutouts.

LaBar, a junior, finished second on the team in points with 29. He tallied 13 goals and three assists.

Johnsburg's Taylor Ordway and Dustin Weller each received first team honors this year.

Ordway, a senior, gets the nod for the second straight year. He led the team this season with eight goals and five assists as he finished a stellar four-year career.

Weller, a senior, finished with five goals and three assists that played most of the season at the sweeper position. He also picks up first team honors for the second consecutive year.

Sam Miller, a senior fullback from Indian Lake/Long Lake, makes the squad in just his second full-year of playing competitive soccer. He used his quickness and developed great aptitude and anticipation this season.

Wells' Stephen Raymond makes the team in his sophomore season. He finished the season with a pair of hat trick games and possesses great speed, quickness and foot work.

Brett Guerin, a senior fullback from Keene, rounds out the first team. He anchored the Beavers defense this season.

Girls

Joining McKinley on this year's first team are Delaney Sears, Allison Sherman and Brendee Russell from Westport.

Sears, a senior, was a versatile player that could play many different spots. Her main spot was on the wing where she had a deadly cross that helped pick up many assists this season. She led the Eagles with nine goals.

Sherman, a senior, helped anchor the midfield with McKinley and Russell. She had great one-on-one moves and was an excellent passer. She finished with three goals and five assists.

Russell, a sophomore, was one of the most aggressive players on the Westport team. She showed tremendous hustle and gave the Eagles some offensive punch, but was really valuable at sweeper. She tallied three goals and assisted on two others this season.

Wells had a strong season in Division III with a 7-4 record. The Indians made it to the semifinals in Class D before falling to Chazy. They were rewarded with a pair of players on the first team.

Bobby Jo Paige, a junior, changed positions this season and excelled at sweeper. She anchored the back and played outstanding defense.

Desiree Gallup, a senior, controlled the midfield and setup the entire offense. She was a great competitor that finished second on the team in points with 13 (5 goals, 3 assists).

Minerva/Newcomb also placed two on this year's first team with an impressive 7-3 record on the season.

Dakota Bennett, a sophomore, led the Mountaineers in scoring with eight goals and six assists. She gives 100 percent and never stops hustling.

Mackenzie Winslow, a freshman, played striker for Minerva/Newcomb. She finished second on the team in scoring with eight goals and an assist.

Crown Point's Hailey White wrapped up her senior season landing on the all star team for the third straight year. She is an extremely fast player that played mostly in the midfield and finished with four goals on the season.

Indian Lake/Long Lake's Kaylyn Bennett, a junior, played in the fullback position this season. She has a great read of the field and often a standout on defense. She is a natural leader and respected by her teammates.

Wrapping up the first team are teammates from Keene, Emma Gothner and Sadie Holbrook.

Gothner, a senior, led the Beavers in scoring this season with nine goals and three assists.

Holbrook, a junior, tallied three goals and assisted on seven others.
