PLATTSBURGH — The defending playoff champion Meron's Expos and Lyon Mountain Miners opened their respective best-of-three semifinal series in the Champlain Valley Baseball League playoffs with wins Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field.

The fifth-seeded Expos recorded a 7-4 win over the top-seeded Plattsburgh Cardinals, while the second-seeded Miners pulled away to a 14-4 victory over the third-seeded Fourth Ward Timberjaxx in a game halted in the eighth inning.

Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will be played this coming Sunday in Lyon Mountain and Plattsburgh, with the Miners and Cardinals being the home teams.

The Cardinals made their only two errors of the game in the inning, while Dahlin had a sacrifice fly, Mark Passino a RBI double and Will Flynn a RBI single. Both Passino and Flynn got their hits with two out.

The Cardinals threatened in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate. Dahlin, however, record a strikeout to put the finishing touch on the victory.
