PLATTSBURGH — The Ernie’s Discount Tools Modifieds compete tonight in a 30-lap ‘Run What Ya Brung’ event that will likely produce some wild-looking adaptations to their DIRTcar machines — wings, foils, scoops etc.
The race, presented by Huntley Trucking and Warren Tire, is for bragging rights, appearance points and a point per-lap-completed only. The championship points battle should be relatively unaffected with the final two regular points events slated for Saturday, August 25 and Modified Championship Night Sunday, September 1.
The J&S Steel Limited Late Models will be chasing the full amount of weekly championship points available as their season heads down the home stretch.
Bucko Branham of Plattsburgh, the 2008 and 2009 division champion when the Limited Late Models ran as the Tiger Sportsmen class, is the point leader.
Branham is trying to deny 2010-2011 champion Robin Wood’s three-peat bid. He leads Wood by 12 points. Jamy Begor of Mooers, looking for his first Limited Late Model crown, is another seven points back. Branham has six feature wins in 2012, although two of them have come in USA/Canada Masters Series races which are separate, point-wise, from the regular season title. Wood and Begor have two feature wins apiece.
Tonight’s race card also includes championship point events for the Adirondack Water Sportsman Modifieds, Key RD Trailer Sales Renegades and the Busch Mini Modifieds.
Airborne has posted the two-day schedule of events for the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Shootout Saturday, Sunday Sept. 8,9 on the Airborne web site - http:// www.airborneparkspeedway.com. Presented by Della Auto Group and Morrisonville Septic, the weekend includes final points races for all divisions — except the Modifieds who crown their champion Sept. 1. At the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Shootout, the Modifieds will compete for the winner’s prize of $5,000, contested over three 50-lap segments.
Gates open today at 4 p.m. Post time is 6 p.m. Adult admission is $12. Kids 12 and under admitted free.
