Nixon Memorial Fast-Pitch Tourney starts tonight
AUSABLE FORKS — The first John Nixon Memorial Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament will begin tonight at Billy Mitchell Memorial Field.
J.J. Diggers takes on 20 Main at 7 p.m., followed by Egglefield/Graymont vs. R.L. Sharpening at 8:30 p.m.
Round-robin play in the seven-team event will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the championship game set for 2 p.m. on Sunday. Other teams in the tournament are Jim Lincoln Pool and Spas from AuSable Forks, Empire Fast-Pitch from Prospect and the Watertown Merchants.
John Nixon was a standout AuSable Valley athlete whose life was cut short by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Nixon was enshrined into the AuSable Valley Hall of Fame in 2008.
St. Joseph’s Church golf tourney at Harmony

PHS sets fall sports meeting for Tuesday
PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh High School will be holding a mandatory meeting for all fall varsity and junior varsity athletes, coaches and a representative, parent or guardian at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21 in the Senior High School Auditorium.
Any representative or parent not attending will have to make alternate arrangements in order for their child to be able to participate in any scheduled league contests. Specific meetings will all coaches will follow.
Jaquish wins Willsboro Match Play tourney
WILLSBORO — Brandon Jaquish continued to dominate play at the Willsboro Golf Course by winning his second Match Play Tournament in a row and third since its inception six years ago. After winning last year’s match play, Jaquish added his first club championship as well.
This year, Jaquish defeated Brandon Smith in the semifinals in the top bracket, sending Smith to his first loss of the tourney and into the semifinals on the bottom bracket. Bill Russell lost his first match early in the tournament but worked his way through to face Smith. Russell beat Smith, 2-and-1, to reach the final against Jaquish.
The finals was well contested, with Russell squaring the match on the final hole. His effort came up just short, however, as Jaquish captured the title on the first extra hole. Jaquish will go for his second-straight club title this weekend.
Peru Rod and Gun Club archery event Sunday
PERU — The Peru Rod and Gun Club will be hosting a 3-D archery shoot on Sunday. Registration will be from 8 a.m. until noon and awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
The rifle range will be closed from Saturday at noon until Monday.
NCCS moves parent/athlete meeting
CHAMPLAIN — The Northeaster Clinton Central School Fall Athletics Parent/Athlete meeting has been moved to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21 in the high school auditorium. All junior varsity and varsity athletes who are participating on a fall athletic team are to attend with their parent or guardian.
Fall youth soccer league registration open
PLATTSBURGH — Registration is now open for the City of Plattsburgh Fall Outdoor Youth Soccer Leagues. The leagues will run from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesdays from Sept. 12 to Oct. 24 on the City Oval. Age range is U-6: ages 4 to 6, U-8: ages 6 to 8, U-10: ages 8 to 10, U-12: ages 10 to 12. Placid tumblingregistration opens Aug. 27
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Center for the Arts will be host tumbling classes for six weeks beginning Sept. 20 in the Annex studio. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27.
During the weekly sessions, youngsters ages 2 to 12 will be introduced to tumbling and basic gymnastic skills. The goal of the program is to develop strength, flexibility and coordination while simultaneously building self-confidence. The classes will be instructed by Donna Walsh, Mary Heaverly and Debbie Neill. Classes will be held on Thursdays.
Tots A (ages 2 to 3 ½; must be accompanied by an adult) will meet from 1 to 1:45 p.m. with a course fee of $50. Tots B will meet from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. (Tots B will be filled first; Tots A will only run if Tots B is full). Kinder Gym (ages 3 ½ to 5) will be 2:4 to 3:45 p.m. with a fee of $60. Wiggle and Roll (ages 5 to 8) will meet at 4to 5 p.m. with a fee of $60. Flips (ages 8 to 12) will be 5 to 6 p.m. with fee of $60.

Brookie’s Pub golf winners listed
PORT KENT — The 2nd-annual Brookie’s Pub Golf Outing was held Saturday, August 4 at Harmony Golf Club.
The scramble format was won by the team of Chuck Cobb, Tom Matilla, Willie Matilla and Russell Alloggio. Second place was won by Phil Moore, Mark Calkins, Denny Doyle and Andy Daggett and third place by Kevin Dennis, Gary Dennis, Issac Robinson and Clayton Barber.
Darwin Bezio and Debbie LaDuke won the longest drive contests, while MaryAnne Bezio and Robinson were closest to the pin winners. The Cobb and Moore teams won the skins.
