NEW PALTZ — It was an uphill battle Tuesday night as the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team faced a double-digit deficit much of the night in an 81-69 loss at New Paltz in the first round of the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament.
New Paltz (18-8) started the game on a 13-0 run and never looked back from there. The Hawks had 12 steals and forced 22 turnovers.
"We made some bad decisions with the ball, just trying to force it a little too much," Plattsburgh coach Cheryl Cole said. "They're a team that does make you turn it over."
Despite the loss, Kathleen Payne capped off an outstanding sophomore season by leading seventh-seeded Plattsburgh with 22 points and nine rebounds. Payne finishes the season with 476 points to set a new single-season mark for the Cardinals.
Freshman Brittany Marshall added 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and six assists. Senior Kerri Salisbury also hit double-digits with 10 points in her final game as a Cardinal.
New Paltz, the No. 2 seed, advanced to the SUNYAC semifinals with the help of Shanay Bradley's double-double. Bradley scored 22 points and pulled down 12 boards for the Hawks.
"(Bradley)'s real strong, and she just rebounds," Cole said. "You have to applaud that kid's effort."
Alex McCullough also contributed 21 points in the win.
Where the Hawks were able to do damage was with their offensive rebounds. New Paltz grabbed 51 rebounds — 26 of which were offensive boards. The Hawks scored 23 second-chance points, while Plattsburgh netted 12.
Plattsburgh finished the year with a 10-15 record overall and a 7-11 record in SUNYAC play. With just one senior, the young Cardinal squad was able to increase their win total by two from the previous season. Payne led all conference scorers.
