PLATTSBURGH — Twenty four boys and 25 girls from Section VII earned spots at the qualifying meet Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House to compete in the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 3 at Cornell University.
Peru led the way with 11 athletes, followed closely by Saranac's 10 and Plattsburgh High's nine.
The next largest contingent is seven from Seton Catholic, Saranac Lake and Ticonderoga with five and AuSable Valley, two.
Seven girls are returning to the state championships — Seton Catholic's Margaret Champagne, Maddy Munn and Melissa Whyman; Saranac Lake's Selena Baillageron; Peru's Ashley Leta, Lea Perry and Saranac's Victoria Phaneuf.
Among the boys, 10 are heading back. These include Saranac's Micah Patterson, Jake Spear, Bill Badger and Corey Duval; Ticonderoga's Jay Hebert; Peru's Jared McLean, Dan Lennon and Bryce Schnaars, Seton Catholic's Barrett Waling and Saranac Lake's Alex Beaudoin.
The top relay teams and top two finishers in each individual event qualify for the state championships.
Athletes who don't finish in these spots may also make it if they reach a state standard, but no one from Section VII did.
Out of the boys, McLean, Lennon, Patterson, Spear, Beaudoin, Hebert, Peru's William Thew, AuSable Valley's Paul Ford and Ticonderoga's Jarryn Granger qualified for two events.
Among the girls, Saranac Lake's Nicky Trudeau qualified for three events.
Leta, Champagne, Whyman, Baillageron, Saranac's Kayla Byerley and Plattsburgh High's Emma Deshaies qualified for two events.
Lennon had the only top 10 finish for a Section VII athlete in last year's championships when he took third in the 1,600.
