Cougars split with Cannoneers

PLATTSBURGH — Clinton Community College's best offense was its defense Thursday night.

The Cougars recorded a 58-35 victory over Jefferson Community College in women's basketball.

Clinton (18-5) held a 25-15 lead at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.

"It was an ugly win," Clinton coach Donna Dixon said. "Defensively, we played very well. We pressured them.

"But they were packed in a 2-3 zone and we weren't generating anything offensively. We shot 7-of-34 from the field in the first half and there was no flow to the game."

Seven Clinton players scored six points or more. Jade Pellerin led the way with 11, while Katrina Garrand added 10 and Ashley Whitty and Sam Diehl had eight apiece.

Chelsey Brooks contributed eight rebounds and three steals, Garrand six steals and three assists, Pellerin six steals and four assists, and Kiyanna Edwards four assists and three steals.

Morgan Kiernan and Joelle Percy led the Cannoneers with 10 points each.

"Jefferson did a good job getting back into their transition defense," Dixon said. "But we didn't put a whole game together tonight. Our defense was our best offense."

The Cougars hit the road for two games this weekend — at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday and then at Broome Community College on Sunday.

PLATTSBURGH — Clinton Community College went cold offensively for a six-minute span late in the game and it cost the Cougars.

Clinton held a 39-32 halftime lead and had a 67-58 advantage with 6:32 left in the contest. The Cougars, however, didn't score again until there was less than one minute remaining.

"That was pretty much the tale of the game," Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said. "We shot the ball pretty well tonight until we went ice cold for those six minutes.

"We hung in there until that point."

James Blue and Jabriel Blue led the Cannoneers with 18 points each, while Matt Johnson added 17.

"We had a hard time keeping them out of the paint," Daugherty said. The two Blues, who are brothers, are very good. They were able to get by us at will."

Chris Miller and Zach Basso combined for 44 points for the Cougars, with Miller getting 23 and Basso 21. Sal Fabozzi dished out seven assists.

Clinton is home this weekend to play Herkimer Community College on Saturday and Columbia-Greene Community College on Sunday.
