PLATTSBURGH — Michael Champagne and the Seton Catholic boys are off and running in pursuit of a state championship in cross country.
The Knights led a strong showing by Section VII athletes Saturday in the Section VII Invitational, which served as a prep race for the state championships also to be held at Plattsburgh State in November.
Champagne, the defending Class D champion, cruised to a 25-second victory in the boys' Class C race to lead Seton Catholic to a 13-point win over Beaver River. There was no Class D competition Saturday; however, the Knights did manage to best three ranked teams.
Beaver River was rated No. 1 among class D schools in the Tully Runner preseason poll with Seton Catholic, third. The Knights also defeated Barker, rated No. 2, by 30 points Saturday while Norwood-Norfolk, ranked fourth, was 10th.
The Knights also received a stellar performance from Zach Ziemer who came in sixth.
The Seton Catholic girls wound up sixth in Class C with Anna Rabideau finishing ninth.
Saranac and Saranac Lake resumed their rivalry in girls' cross country with the Chiefs finishing fourth and the Red Storm, fifth. Beekmantown's Bailey Weightman and Maile Sapp came in 10th and 11th in that race.
The Beekmantown boys, with Brendan Courneene and Adam Shearer coming in fifth and sixth, placed third in Boys Varsity B.
Class A standouts and 2008 Footlocker finalists Alex Deir (Honeoye Falls Lima) and Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall) posted the fastest times of the day. Deir ran a 15:47 for a three-second victory while Cuffe ran a 17:22 to win by 53 seconds.
Class A's fourth-ranked preseason team, North Rockland, and unranked Honeoye Falls Lima traded places through the top 6, but North Rockland's depth was decisive in a 40-72 victory.
Unranked Honeoye Falls Lima girls upset No. 8 Queensbury to win the A race. Eighth-ranked Greenwich was an easy winner in the C race.
