AKWESASNE — The race fans were ready and the cars were lined up in the pit area, but late arriving showers and lingering drizzle forced the cancellation of Friday night's racing program Mohawk International Raceway (MIR) presented by Keegan's Tobacco Shop.
While Friday night's rainout was a disappointment for race teams and fans, everyone is looking forward to the next few weeks of action at MIR.
Next Friday, Chief's Tobacco Outlet will present a special 50-lap feature for the Frenchie's Chevrolet DIRTcar 358 Modifieds along with a full program of racing for the DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks and Bandits. Race time is 7:45 p.m.
The month of August kicks off Aug. 6 as Bailey Ford presents Mohawk Madness, with the only appearance of the season for the open-wheeled Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS).
The ESS race offers special bonus money, with $2,500 going to the winner, and bonus points are on the line for both the ESS SUNY Canton New York mini-series and the Northwood 2 Canadian Sprint Car Series mini-series.
A full show of racing is planned except for the Pro Stocks who will be at Autodrome Granby.
On Friday, Aug. 13, CKON 97.3 will present a full show of racing for the Frenchie's Chevrolet DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks and Bandits.
The third weekend of August will see the first ever appearance of the World of Outlaws Late Model series at MIR, with this two-day event being billed as the biggest stock car race ever held in the North Country and the biggest Late Model race in New York State.
Friday, Aug. 20, The World of Outlaws Late Models will have time trials and heat races and on Aug. 21, will be the World of Outlaws Late Model last chance "B-Main" and then the 100-lap World of Outlaw Late Model feature event paying $20,000 to win out of a total purse of $120,000.
North Country fans will have two local stars to cheer for as former World of Outlaw Late Model champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown (currently second in Outlaw points) and World of Outlaw star Tim Fuller (currently eighth in points) of Edwards.
Joining the World of Outlaw Late Models on Aug. 21 will be the Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock tour, with a 50-lap feature event. The Bandits will also be on the Saturday night racing program.
Rounding out the month of August on Aug. 27, Parkway Country Polaris will present a full show of racing.
