Chiefs, Sentinels win again
You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.
PLATTSBURGH — So much for close calls.
The Saranac girls and Ticonderoga boys repeated as Section VII Indoor Track & Field champions by even greater margins than in 2009.
The Chiefs, with hurdler Alex Farrington and distance ace Morgan Kelly in Boston for the Harvard Model U.N. competition, still managed to lap the field, tallying 171 points to easily out-distance runner-up Peru, with 81. It was an unprecedented 10th consecutive indoor championship for the Saranac girls.
The Sentinels, considered not deep as the squad that won by 11 in 2009, extended the margin to 20, outscoring second-place Beekmantown 116-96 to lock up their fifth indoor title in six years.
The meet held Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House went almost true to form with 12 top seeds for the girls and 11 favorites for the boys winning as expected. And one presectional pick, Seton Catholic speedster Rhea Breyette, suffered the misfortune of being disqualified for coming to the start line with a hair-tie on her wrist.
Saranac, once more, relied on its depth with 15 girls figuring in the scoring and the Chiefs picking up at least eight points in every event, except the long jump where they scored four. Saranac took only four firsts, but had eight girls tally at least 13 points in individual events.
The Chiefs were remarkably consistent in the relays, earning 24 points with three second-place finishes.
Robbie Bailey (20), Maxine Rock (19), Katie McIntosh (18), Melissa Whyman (16), Kaitlyn Facteau (15), Emily Crawford (13), Tricia Helms (13) and Jackie Bowen (13) led the Saranac point parade. Bailey won the 55-meter hurdles, Helms, the shot put, and McIntosh, the high jump, while Facteau beat top-seed Rachel Danis of Peru to the wire in the 300-meter dash. Facteau bettered her seed time by two-tenths of a second with a 45.3.
Teammates Bailey and Crawford came in third and fifth in the 300 to make that Saranac's best event of the meet.
Luke Bartlett (22 points) and Jonathan Granger (20), as expected, scored well for the Ticonderoga boys with Jay Berube enjoying a breakthrough meet with 21 points.
Berube, seeded fifth in the 1,000 meters, won a stirring stretch duel with Beekmantown's Brendan Courneene, hitting the line in 2:46.1, just four-tenths in front of the Eagle standout. Berube clipped more than 18 seconds off his previous best. He also came in third in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200, an event in which he wasn't among the top 10.
Bartlett cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 7 inches to win the high jump by five inches. He added a pair of thirds in the triple and long jumps.
Granger, one of two returning champs in the boys' meet, missed his season-best by two inches, but still repeated in the long jump with ease, reaching 21 feet, 11 inches to win by more than one foot. He also upset top-seed Ian Tavano of Peru in the 300 meters, winning by more than one second in 37.7, or a full second faster than his seed time.
Ticonderoga's Jay Hebert won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.2 seconds, almost a second faster than the runner-up.
Rabideau triple-winner
Seton Catholic's Anna Rabideau was the day's only three-time winner. She anchored the 3,200-meter relay team to victory and then the 1,000 and the 1,500. The latter Rabideau bettered her seed time by 21.4 seconds.
AuSable Valley's Sidney Flint swept the long and triple jumps with season-bests. Flint went 16 feet, 3½ inches in the long jump to improve on her previous best by six inches and then took the triple jump in 32-11¾ or an improvement of 1½ feet.
Peru's Ashley Leta and Rachel Danis were returning champs with Leta duplicating her victory in the 600 while Danis, the 300 winner last year, captured the 55-meter dash this time around. Leta and Danis also added firsts in the sprint relay.
Seton Catholic's Elizabeth Fisher also doubled — in the 3,200 relay and the 3,000. Fisher ran 18 seconds faster than she had before to edge out top-seed Melissa Whyman of Saranac by nearly two seconds.
The Knights' Michael Champagne claimed firsts in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 relay while Peru's Ian Tavano doubled in the 55-meter dash and sprint relay. Tavano nipped AuSable Valley's Austin Davis, who came back to win the 600 as expected.
Beekmantown's Adam Shearer won the 3,200 by almost 22 seconds and Peru's Jordan Barrett put away the shot put by more than two feet with a season-best toss of 39-7¼.
Next up will be the state qualifier Feb. 20 at the Field House. Several teams and/or individuals will head to Canton and St. Lawrence University this Friday for the Section X Invitational.
