Senior Mariners capture doubleheader

PLATTSBURGH — Offensive production hasn’t been a problem for the Clinton County Senior Mariners of late.

The Mariners scored a combined 24 runs Wednesday in a 10-7 and 14-2, 5-inning sweep of the Norfolk Rovers Post 925 in American Legion baseball at Lefty Wilson Field.

“We’ve been playing a lot of games and we’re going to play nine games from this Saturday to next Saturday in two tournaments,” said Mariners coach John Flynn. “We have been swinging the bats well.”

The Mariners (18-6), however, were tested in the first game. Clinton County jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings before the Rovers got five in the fourth to pull to within a run.

The Mariners held an 8-7 advantage going to the bottom of the sixth when Joe Tolosky rapped a 2-run homer.

“That was a big hit for us,” said Flynn. “It was 8-7 when he hit the home run and it gave us some breathing room.”

Brian Latulipe led the Mariners with three hits, including a double, while Chris Roenbeck added two doubles. C.J. Worley and Tom Curran each chipped in with a double.

Worley started on the mound and picked up the win, while Ben Weightman got the save in relief.

The second game, however, wasn’t as close.

The Mariners held a 4-2 lead after two and then broke it open with eight runs in the third, with Logan Recor’s 3-run homer the big blow in the inning.

“These were league games in the district (District 4) and they were important because we locked up second place behind Saratoga,” said Flynn. “We’re 7-1 in the league and that gives us a first-round bye in the districts.”

Curran led a 13-hit offense with a single and two doubles, while Recor added two hits, including his home run, and Weightman two singles.

Weightman pitched the first three innings for the win and Brandon Rabideau two scoreless innings to finish up.

“Worley and Weightman gave us some innings today with so many games coming up for us,” said Flynn. “They always throw strikes. And Rabideau is coming around for us.

“We were able to rest some of our arms today.”

The Mariners will next take part in the Mohawk Classic, hosted by the Anaconda Indians, on Saturday and Sunday in Schenectady.

The season is starting to wind down for the Mariners, who will play in the week-long Coopers Cave Tournament before hosting the District 4 Playoffs, beginning on July 20.
