MANSFIELD, Pa. — The Clinton County Senior Mariners had their comeback bid fall short in their second game Saturday and settled for a split during first-day action in the Mansfield University Showcase Tournament.
The Mariners (13-6) hung on for a 5-4 victory over Go Wags in the first contest, but then dropped an 8-4 decision to the Brockville Bunnies.
The Mariners will take on Corning Post today at 9 a.m. and that contest will determine who Clinton County plays next.
Against Go Wags, the Mariners broke a 3-all tie with two runs in the sixth inning. Go Wags got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded when Kasey Favreau struck out the game’s final batter. Favreau allowed nine hits in going the distance for the win.
“I left Kasey in there and he battled to get the final out,” said Mariners coach John Flynn.
Brian Latulipe led Clinton County offensively with a single, triple and two RBI. Logan Recor added a two-run single, while Jake Richards, Tom Curran, Will Flynn and Chris Roenbeck all chipped in with doubles.
“It was a good game for us,” said Flynn. “We did some good things offensively — Latulipe swung the bat real well. We also played well defensively.”
Against Brockville, the Mariners trailed by a 5-1 score before cutting their deficit to 5-4 with three runs in the sixth. The Bunnies, however, regained the momentum with three in the seventh.
“Richards had a big pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth for us that helped cut it to 5-4,” said Flynn. “But then we let it slip away in the seventh.”
Losing pitcher Robby Knowles rapped a double and single for the Mariners, while Flynn added two singles and a RBI.
“All in all, we were right there in the loss to Brockville,” said Flynn. “I can’t feel bad about the way we played. Brockville is a very good team and so was the team we played earlier in the day.
“We just have to do some of the little things better.”
