PLATTSBURGH — The Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTcar Modifieds are back in action tonight at Airborne as part of a five-division race card on Dunkin Donuts/High Peaks Dental Group Night.
After a week off last Saturday, several local teams hauled out to Dunn Tire Park in Lancaster for round two of the Modified Asphalt Series. Pat McGrail of Candiac, QC, driving the Fastenal No. 10, was a dominant winner there Tuesday night.
McGrail, somewhat recovered from a rib cage injury suffered during a bout with the Airborne frontstretch wall three weeks ago, is 5th in points. He trails point leader Todd Stone of Middlebury, Vt., George Foley, Greg Atkins and Patrick Dupree.
Stone wired a full field from the outside pole in the Modified Series 75-lap opener June 20.
It’s been a boom or bust season for Foley, who has three wins and two dnf’s due to motor problems.
Plattsburgh’s Bucko Branham is also a three-time winner this season. His last win in the Liquor & Wine Warehouse/Daniels Signs No. 20 vaulted him to the top spot in the J&S Steel Limited Late Model standings, one point better than Jamy Begor of Mooers.
Tuesday, July 3, beginning at 6 p.m., Hart’s Auto, Dunkin Donuts and Pepsi present a high-contact novelty car soccer contest followed by one of the region’s largest fireworks displays. Advance tickets for Fireworks Night ($18/carload) are being sold at Della Suzuki in Plattsburgh. Go-Kart rides at a discounted price are available from 4-6 p.m. Tickets on the day of the event are $20/carload or $10 per person.
Five teams have entered the car soccer competition so far. Popularized at state fairs in the Midwest, car soccer has the same objective as regular soccer — score more goals — only the ball weighs a few hundred more pounds and hitting it hard enough to move it along without wiping yourself out can be tricky.
