Softball tourney seeks teams, volunteers

WEST PLATTSBURGH — The Seventh-Annual Play to Give Coed Softball Tournament seeks teams, volunteer umpires, scorekeepers, photographers and general helpers for its event Aug. 21-22 at American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh.

To date, 45 teams have paid the $125 entry fee, making it one of the largest softball tournaments in the area. It will benefit the FitzPatrick Cancer Center of CVPH.

In addition to the softball, there will be activities for kids, including a fishing derby, entertainment, horse and carriage rides and food.

Car wash, bottle drive to aid girls' hockey

CHAZY — The Lady Eagles Hockey program will sponsor a car wash and bottle drive Saturday, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department.

Also, the girls will be going door to door collecting bottles and cans during the same hours.

All funds raised will be used to support the local girls' varsity ice hockey team. For more information, call 570-7046.

Bowl Mart Lanes lists league openings

ROUSES POINT — Bowl Mart Lanes has announced its leagues for the upcoming season. They will include the following:

Monday- 5-person league, starts at 6:30 p.m.; women's three-person league, starts at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday- Pepsi Classic League, starts at 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday- Senior League, starts at 10 a.m.; Mixed League, starts at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday- Children's League, starts at 10 a.m.

NCCS hockey team having benefit

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton Central School hockey team and the Friends of NCCS will be holding a bottle drive fundraiser the weekend of August 28-29.

Drop bottles off at the Lake Street Fish Company on Route 9B/Lake Street or 13 Mountain View Drive. For more information, contact Kat Letourneau, at 297-2907. All proceeds will go directly to the NCCS varsity hockey team through the Friends of NCCS Hockey.

NCYH to sponsor coin drop

ROUSES POINT — North Country Youth Hockey will be having a coin drop and bottle drive/drop-off on August 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rouses Point Recreation Center.

Parents and children are encouraged to attend and help out (2 hours of your volunteer hours can be used towards Snack Bar Hours). Parents with trucks and trailers and kids with Cougars shirts are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the Rec Center.

AuSable Valley to hold sports meeting

CLINTONVILLE — AuSable Valley Athletics will be conducting their modified coaches/parents/athletes' fall pre-season meeting on Thursday, August 26 in the Middle/High School Auditorium.

The coaches meeting will be from 4-6 p.m. followed by the parents/athletes meeting at 6:30 p.m. All modified parents and athletes are encouraged to attend.

PLATTSBURGH — The Polaris Ladies League will hold a meeting August 30 at 6:30 p.m. at North Bowl Lanes.

5K Downhill Race Sept. 10-12

WILMINGTON — The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park, operated by High Peaks Cyclery, is hosting its Fifth Annual 5k Downhill Race Sept. 10-12. The race, being held on Whiteface, is not only the finals for the Pro Gravity Tour, but is also the seventh event of the 8-race Gravity East Series. Online registration for the 5K downhill is now open to the public.

On-site registration will be from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, and from 8-10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12. Lift tickets will be $35 for a one day and $65 for a two day during the race weekend.

The race will have a $5,000 cash purse that will be awarded for pro racers. The top three places in all amateur categories for the downhill race will win prizes from our sponsors: Pro Men's 1st place - $1,500.00. Pro Men's 2nd place - $750.00. Pro Men's 3rd place - $500.00. Pro Women's 1st place - $1,250.00. Pro Women's 2nd place - $650.00. Pro Women's 3rd place - $350.00.

North Country Handicap League to meet

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Handicap League will hold it organizational meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at North Bowl Lanes. The meeting is open to the returning team captains or a representative of the team. Important information will be discussed along with items to be voted on.

Ladies bass tourney Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — The Irene Jabaut Memorial Ladies Of The Lake Bass Fishing Tournament, sponsored by the Plattsburgh Bass Club, Saturday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Lake Champlain.

All volunteer Captains and First Mates with boats are asked to be at Wilcox Dock at 7:30 a.m. Ladies are asked to be at Wilcox Dock at 8 a.m. for instructions and boat assignments. Weigh-ins and release will be at Wilcox Dock immediately following the tournament. Awards and lunch will follow at the American Legion Post 1619.

Open 3-D archery shoot Sunday

CLINTONVILLE — The Chesterfield Fish and Game Club is hosting an Open 3-D Archery Shoot on Aug. 22 on the club grounds on Green Street in Clintonville. Archers may choose to compete in the Triple Crown event if they have already participated in the Triple Crown events in the West Chazy and Siberian clubs. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. with an Early Bird Start. Adults and youths are welcomed to shoot competitively or non-competitively. Lunch is available, and Ppizes will be awarded.

Demong among Tour of Utah riders

PARK CITY, Utah — 2010 Olympic medalist Billy Demong of Vermontville is spending time in the saddle as he competes on Team Cole Sport in the 2010 Tour of Utah bike race. After Tuesday's prologue, Demong sat 47 seconds behind the leader, Taylor Phinney of Team Livestrong, Lance Armstrong's Development Team.

The Tour, which is made up of five stages, ends Sunday with the "Queen Stage" made up of four grueling climbs to a mountain top finish.

Joining the Tour of Utah this year are Tour de France riders Levi Leipheimer — the only rider competing individually — George Hincapie and Brent Bookwalter.

Keeseville slow pitch tourney Sept. 11-12

KEESEVILLE — The Keeseville Men's Medium Pitch Softball League will be holding a double-elimination slow pitch softball tournament Sept. 11-12 at the Keeseville VFW. Bollt and Murray fastest in time trial

POINT AU ROCHE — Eric Bollt placed first in the Aug. 18 10-mile bicycle time trial, posting a time of 21:46. He was followed by Doug Chase in 23:54. Lynne Murray was the first-place female, clocking 26:10. Alicia Chase finished in 27:08. Mairi West outdistanced her father to capture the 5-mile title with a time of 24:41. The event included three generations of the West family.

The weekly event is open to all novice and experienced riders, road bikes or mountain bikes. Helmets are mandatory and all riders must obey the rules of the road. Sign-up starts around 5:30 p.m. with the first rider going out at 6 p.m. Riders interested in the 25-mile event should be prepared to start between 5:30-5:45 p.m.

Adirondack Canoe Classic Sept. 10-12

OLD FORGE — Hundreds of canoe and kayak paddlers from near and far will make their annual pilgrimage to the Adirondack waterways for the 28th Adirondack Canoe Classic starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10.

The 90-Miler is a three-day paddling extravaganza. Paddlers will make their way through the Fulton Chain, the Eckford Chain, Long Lake, the Raquette River, and the Saranac Lakes. There are also several miles of portages.

The event is full with a maximum field of 250 boats and more than 500 paddlers entered into 14 classes. The 90-Miler is for both competitive and noncompetitive paddlers. This year about 95 boats are entered in the open touring division; a broad cross section of tandem and solo canoes and kayaks will race for the handcrafted wooden plaques; 15 guideboats are entered, 9 Voyageur canoe teams are signed up and 50 four-person teams are scheduled to ply the waters along the 90 mile route.
