UTICA — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team did what it had to over the weekend.
The Cardinals, following up on a 7-1 win the day before, skated to a 3-1 victory over Utica College Sunday to clinch at least second place in the ECAC West.
Plattsburgh State (17-5-2, 15-1-2) closed out its conference season, while RIT will pass the Cardinals in the standings and host the ECAC West Tournament Final Four with two wins at Cortland this coming weekend.
The Tigers will be heavy favorites in the two games and it would take an incredible feat for the Red Dragons to get a tie or win in one of those contests, enabling the Cardinals to win the ECAC West regular season title.
"All we had to worry about was ourselves this weekend," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "And hopefully get some breaks on the other end. But that didn't happen.
"We did, however, finish the conference regular season on a good note. Utica is a good team. They're not going to make the playoffs this year but they're the best seventh-place team you'll see.
"No doubt, I knew it was going to be a difficult game for us today."
Teal Gove scored two goals for the Cardinals and Justine Fisher tallied the game-winning goal, breaking a 1-all tie 2:08 into the third.
Gove scored a power-play goal at 15:03 of the first period before Meghan Willet tied it for the Pioneers (8-12-3, 5-9-2) with 14:10 gone in the second.
Utica outshot the Cardinals, 9-6, in the second but the Cardinals held a 15-8 advantage in the third. Gove gave Plattsburgh State some insurance when she scored at the 10:03 mark to make it 3-1.
In some ways, Houle felt his team played better Sunday than it did the day before when the Cardinals won by six goals.
"Honestly, we didn't play that great in the second period but had some chances early on," Houle said. "We hit the crossbar on a breakaway and missed two tap-ins. So, the shots on goal in the second were a little deceiving. Plus, we had a couple of penalties that took away our momentum.
"Overall our time of possession today was better than it was yesterday. We finished yesterday. Today, we played hard in a lot of areas."
The Cardinals finished with a 31-21 advantage in shots on goal and Sydney Aveson recorded 20 saves to get the win in net. Jennifer Hamel made 28 stops for the Pioneers.
The Cardinals have one game remaining in the regular season and it's an important one. Plattsburgh State plays a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Middlebury College on Saturday and a win would look nice on the Cardinals' NCAA resume.
