PERU — Saturday was nearly a perfect day for the Peru wrestling team.
The Indians placed 10 in the finals and crowned eight individual champions while defending their Section VII championship.
Peru finished the Section VII meet with 192.5 points, followed by Northern Adirondack in second with 167.5, Saranac third with 144, Beekmantown fourth with 133 and AuSable Valley fifth with 30.
"We were hoping for nine champions and we got eight," Peru co-head coach Mike Hogan said. "But you can't worry about that.
"The kids wrestled real hard and have been pretty steady all year. It was a good day for us."
Northern Adirondack and Saranac each had three individual champions, and Beekmantown had the other.
"I was pretty happy," Northern Adirondack coach Jamie Gilmore said. "We won two weight classes we were expecting to win and lost in another we were hoping for. We also got one surprise."
The surprise was Hunter Carpenter's 11-6 overtime decision over Peru's Noah Phillips in the 145-pound final. Carpenter got a reversal in the final seconds to tie the match and then prevailed in overtime. Phillips was having a sensational season with a 37-0 mark coming into the tournament.
For his efforts, Carpenter was chosen as the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
"Hunter is a good wrestler even thought he's in only his first year on the varsity," Gilmore said. "He's won over 20 matches this year (28), and he wrestled a great match today."
The Indians got wins from Ethan Feazelle (99), Kyler Agoney (106), Max Marte (113), Jordan Bushey (126), Jacob Goddeau (132), Nick Forget (138), Troy Seymour (170) and Luke McKee (220).
In the finals, Feazelle edged out a 3-2 decision over Northern Adirondack's Austin Trombley, Agoney pinned Northern Adirondack's Rusty Pombrio in 4:59 to become a three-time sectional champion, and Marte pinned Beekmantown's Konner German in 1:22. Bushey recorded a 6-0 decision over Saranac's Trevor Goddeau.
"It's been back and forth between Bushey and Goddeau all season," Hogan said. "Trevor is a great competitor, and Jordan wrestled really well today."
Saranac's Jacob Goddeau, who is unbeaten this season, became a four-time sectional champion with a pin in 4:40 over Kaleb Sample of Northern Adirondack in the finals.
Goddeau also won the Champion of Champions Award, a respect award which is voted on by wrestlers who advance to the finals.
Also in the finals, Forget pinned Nortern Adirdack's Matt Carter in 1:31; Seymour became a three-time sectional champion with a pin in 3:47 over Beekmantown's Brandon Defayette; and McKee a 7-0 decision over Northern Adirondack's Russell Noel.
"We won the CVAC title this season and were 19-4 in dual meets," Hogan said. "We would have been 22-1 if we didn't have some kids get in trouble one weekend."
Northern Adirondack also had 10 wrestlers in the finals, and three of them will advance to the states.
In addition to Carpenter, Jackson Sunderland recorded a 6-4 win over Saranac's Joe Perry in the finals at 152, and Justin Kellett made it two sectional titles for himself with a pin of Beekmantown's Dylan Peryea in 4:16.
"All our kids worked hard to get here," Gilmore said. "It wasn't from not giving their all for the ones who finished in second."
Saranac had five wrestlers in the finals and came away with three wins.
Codie Gillette recorded a 3-2 win over Northern Adirondack's Scott Kellett in the 120-pound finals. Nate Wood was an 11-0 winner over AuSable Valley's Matt LaMere at 182, denying the Patriots their lone chance for a champion, and unbeaten Ben Perry captured his second sectional crown with a pin in 50 seconds over Northern Adirondack's Dallas Page at 195.
"We wrestled pretty well," Saranac coach Heath Smith said. "The three kids who won for us have done a great job all year, and I'm proud of them.
"I was a little disappointed that our two other finalists (Trevor Goddeau and Joe Perry) weren't able to win their weight classes because they've work hard. But winning three out of five isn't bad."
Beekmantown's Hayden Head, wrestling at 285, became a three-time sectional champion when he pinned Peru's Derrick Cumber in 2:13.
