PSU women win but don't get standings help

UTICA — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team took care of business Saturday.

But the Cardinals didn't get the help they needed in Elmira.

Emma Rutherford scored three goals to lead Plattsburgh State to a 7-1 victory over Utica in ECAC West play. RIT, meanwhile, skated to a 2-1 win in Elmira to complete a home-and-home weekend sweep of the Soaring Eagles.

What it all means is Plattsburgh (16-5-2, 14-1-2 ECAC West), with a win over Utica today, will likely wind up second in the regular-season standings behind RIT.

The top-ranked Tigers (14-1-1) would still trail the Cardinals, but they have two ECAC West games remaining next weekend against Cortland and would make up the difference with two wins.

And it would take a minor miracle for the Red Dragons (3-12-1 ECAC West) to either tie or defeat the Tigers and give home ice to Plattsburgh State in the ECAC West Tournament final four.

"We knew going into the weekend we were playing for either first or second place," Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. "We will need to play better (Sunday) and take care of business. With RIT winning (Saturday), I've already talked to the girls about it."

Elmira is in third place with a 13-3 league mark and has two games remaining against Oswego. The Soaring Eagles could not catch Plattsburgh for second if the Cardinals win today.

Even though the Cardinals won by six goals Saturday, Houle felt there was room for improvement.

"Sometimes the score can be a little deceiving," he said. "We didn't play particularly well, to tell you the truth. We were fortunate to come out of the first period with a 2-0 lead.

"We scored a lot of nice goals, don't get me wrong. Emma Rutherford scored three nice goals, going upper shelf on all of them. But we gave up too many scoring opportunities in our own end.

"We did some good things, and we need to do some things better as well."

Teal Gove, Shannon Stewart, Chelsea VanGlahn and Alyssa Parke also scored for the Cardinals, who were outshot by a 29-24 margin.

Plattsburgh held a 4-0 lead until Meredith Tice tallied for the Pioneers (8-11-3, 5-8-2) with 20 seconds left in the second period.

Sydney Aveson stopped 28-of-29 shots in the Plattsburgh State nets.

"We didn't match Utica's work ethic early on," Houle said. "Hopefully we can rebound(Sunday), play better and get the same results."
