UTICA — The Clinton Community College women's basketball team withstood a barrage of 3-pointers by Mohawk Valley in a 78-71 victory.
The Hawks connected on 10 3-pointers in the first half for 35 of their points, but the Cougars were still able to hold a slim 38-35 lead at the half, thanks in large part to Emily Decker.
Decker scored 19 of her 21 points in the half before her night was cut short by a leg injury at the 18 minute mark of the second half.
"We went to man-to-man in the second half, and they were only able to hit two 3-pointers after that," Clinton coach Donna Dixon said.
"They just didn't have an answer for Decker in the first half, and she was able to get them into foul trouble as well."
The second half proved to be a game of runs, but the Cougars grabbed the lead with around nine minutes remaining and never gave up the lead.
"We hit our free throws, got some baskets and we were able to handle their pressure," Dixon said. "We only had six turnovers in the second half to go with 11 assists."
Katrina Garrand added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for Clinton (15-5). Jade Pellerin chipped in with 13 points and six assists while Ashley Whitty had 10 points and seven rebounds. Kiyanna Edwards finished with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Shaniece Brown led Mohawk Valley with a game-high 31 points, including five 3-pointers. Ashley Cox added eight points.
The Cougars take to the court today as they travel to Tompkins-Cortland for a noon tipoff.

HUDSON — Saints' coach Chad LaDue felt that his team was lacking energy in the first half.
So, the coach gave a few of his bench players some extra minutes in the second half — and it paid off.
Steve Carder exploded for 34 points and 14 rebounds as North Country outscored the Twins, 47-32 in the second half to capture the victory.
"I decided to go with a second group in the second half," LaDue said. "It was a good opportunity for them and they proved that they wanted to play and really stepped up.
"I thought they played the way basketball should be played."
Gene Bouyer added 18 points for the Saints ( 14-12) while Darien Briscoe chipped in with 10 points. Steven Poulter finished with nine points.
"We hung around in the first half, but I wasn't really pleased with our energy," LaDue said. "In the second half we played with a lot more energy.
