CORTLAND — Forgive the Chazy and Northville girls' soccer teams for being a bit tired.
Both squads had to go extra distance just to get to today's championship game at Tompkins-Cortland Community College.
The Eagles (19-1-1) put together a second-half rally to tie the game in the final minute of regulation in its semifinal game against Remsen Saturday. After two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden-death periods, Chazy got past the Rams on penalty kicks.
Northville, the Section II champion, edged Section VI's Ellicottville, 2-1, in sudden-death overtime to advance to the championship game.
"They're going to have the same kind of fitness day we had," Chazy coach Karin Sherman-Trombley said. "It might come down to survival of the fittest (today) and the team that wants it the most. There's so much skill when it comes to soccer, but a lot of it is mental, and I think mentally we're ready, ready to take on anybody. We have a good shot to go back-to-back."
Chazy has the edge in experience, making its third straight trip into the title game. The Eagles won it all last year and are looking to make it two in a row.
"It's an amazing feeling and we're blessed just to be here," Sherman-Trombley said following the semifinal win, "but we want to go back-to-back, that's our goal."
Northville (15-4-1) defeated Sharon Springs for its fourth straight Section II Class D title. The Falcons beat John A. Coleman in the regional finals before ousting Ellicottville Saturday.
Sherman-Trombley didn't have a lot of input on Northville, ranked fifth in the state, but did say they are a good passing team.
Chazy, ranked first in the state, is a bit banged up after its physical game with the Rams. Leading scorer Caitlyn LaPier, who assisted on two second-half goals and scored a penalty kick, injured her ankle in the game.
She said that isn't going to stop her from playing today. Not after an emotional and hard-fought semifinal victory.
"Our team is so close," said LaPier, a senior who is in her fifth year on varsity. "They pulled me through as much as I pulled them. It was amazing."
"Everybody is so pumped," said Chazy senior goalkeeper Katharine Tooke, who was on the ground for a few minutes Saturday after a Remsen player collided with her. "Everybody wants it bad and we're going to get it."
The game is set for an 11 a.m. start.
