Speakout: Sept. 6, 2010

Laws

I would like to speak out on the issues with the Army Reserve Center and the lawn care. This issue is not controlled by the occupants of the building. This contracted out to a vender in Malone. It is not the responsibility on the soldiers. They are not authorized to maintain the property. The goals on Battle Assy is to train for missions. The lawns across the street are not cared for as stated before. It is also unlawful for the people to park cars in their lawns. Do you ever talk about that? People not following the laws.

Sense

After buying all my child's school supplies on the list provided by the teacher the sum was over $100 for one child. With three children and school clothes, it was more than my budget can take. Now school taxes are just around the corner. I think teachers are not using their heads when they insist on a certain color ink or kind of pencil. Students can only write on one side of the paper, etc... come on. Teachers are great, but need to use common sense when insisting on certain supplies.

9/11

How many victims were there on 9/11? If you said 3,000 or 10,000 or even 100,000 you were wrong. We all were and continue to be victims. Not to diminish the loss of the people murdered, their families, or those injured and still suffering, we all share their grief. We all face increased security at the airports, distrust, fear and doubt. Even a failed terrorist plot reopens all of those feelings, and the radical Muslims win again. The planned Cordoba House rubs salt in the wounds of all Americans.

Cordoba

If you would like to learn more about the "ground zero mosque," also called the Cordoba House, please look up the history of Cordoba, Spain. This can be found in any encyclopedia or on wikipedia.com. You should also read about Brigitte Gabriel on a website called ameri cancongressforturth.com.

Kids

Parents need to start watching their kids when they are at the YMCA more often. Kids pick up things that aren't theirs at all and they go missing and love to switch locks around on lockers, as that happened to mine over the weekend. The YMCA staff had to cut it off, and it wasn't very fun as it made me late for a class that I paid for. A friend of mine caught two little girls playing with a shampoo bottle in the showers that wasn't theirs. Please watch your kids. It's not the staff's job.

Roads

It's nice to see sections of Couch Street being repaired, but what about the much more highly traveled upper Broad Street by The Church of the Nazarene, down what feels like a "cow path" to Prospect

Lights

The street lamp on Route 3 as you enter the Town Of Plattsburgh by the former Ames Plaza is still burned out. I mentioned this here twice. Are they repaired once a year or a decade?

Speed

When's the last time anyone saw a speed trap in the City of Plattsburgh? Lower Broad street is a racetrack by Stafford School, and red lights are run regularly all through the City and Town. Get those Troopers off the un-congested Interstate and into the much-more trafficked City and Town.

Priorities

What is up with Keeseville? The ball park on Soper Road now has a huge stone flower bed and yet there is no water spouts to refill water bottles and no bathrooms! Wake up Keeseville and get your priorities straight.

Unions

Unions protect lazy people.

Kudos

I am embarrassed to say that I should have written much sooner. When we had near-tornado winds a few weeks ago, the NYSEG and Verizon trucks were out within 20 minutes of losing power out in Merrill and Lyon Mountain and worked round the clock — literally — until power came on. These guys and gals had families at home that needed help, too but stayed out to get the job done. Kudos to our unspoken heroes!

Judge

I really can't believe some of the stuff people complain about. What someone wears to religious service means nothing, what is important is the fact you are there. God does not judge people for what they wear and you have not right to judge people either.

Palin

Whether you love or hate Sarah Palin, whether you agree or disagree with her, you have to admit that she has been responsible for many of us learning more about Alaska.

Meaningful

The Speakout has once again shown itself to be the home of people's nonsensical ramblings because they can't find anybody that cares to listen to them any other way. You people need to mind your business and get a real hobby. What bearing does the location of GP employees smoking really have on anything? What is the point of complaining about somebody having plywood structures on their property? Please, PR, screen out the nonsense and give this forum meaning by allowing meaningful discussion to take place.

Backfire

Barney Frank recently announced Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are insolvent and need to be shut down. Previously, he assured George Bush, to the detriment of the economy, that these two mortgage giants were solvent and necessary. I believe the democrats brought about the economic meltdown to embarrass the Bush administration and insure a victory in 2008. I don't think they realized how badly this would backfire. Why else would they have received so many contributions from the bailed-out companies.

Consideration

This Speakout is for the individuals that have no regard for others and only think of themselves. I live in the south end of the city and have had to burden the City Police to inform individuals in my neighborhood that they are bothering others with their incessant barking dog (11 hours straight) and their weekly Wednesday parties until 3:30 a.m. Obviously, these individuals show total disregard for other neighbors and seem to think that they can do whatever they want and that the rest of the neighborhood will tolerate their poor decision making. Have some consideration!

Parking

North Catherine Street is a street, not a parking lot! You people that park on North Catherine street between Riley and Bailey are ridiculous. Pull into your friend's driveway or park on a street that isn't as heavily utilized as N. Catherine is with the exit from the Northway dumping traffic onto it. Police, please ticket!

Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi has lost touch with reality. She thinks that anyone who is against the mosque near ground zero should be investigated. I don't understand how Californians can keep electing some one who can't understand normal thinking.

Crosswalks

It amazes me to see all the crosswalks in Plattsburgh with the yellow caution figures showing NYS Law, etc but not one crosswalk has been placed in front of the city post office. I can't tell you the number of near misses with pedestrians I witness on a daily basis. What do you think folks? Do we need a 5,000-signature petition or will one city personnel in the correct department read this and get it done?
