TO THE EDITOR: Now that the campaign season is over, we can finally get a break from all those awful ads.
Most people know those ads and the huge sums of money that paid for them were unleashed by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.
But did you know we’re now one-quarter of the way to reversing that decision by amending the U.S. Constitution?
As of this letter, 24 U.S. senators and 75 U.S. representatives have introduced or co-sponsored amendments to overturn Citizens United.
And 11 states have formally called for an amendment, including two, Montana and Colorado, where the voters statewide just voted to call for one.
The 11 states that have called for an amendment are: Hawaii, New Mexico, Vermont, Rhode Island, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Montana and Colorado.
Let’s add our state to that list.
TO THE EDITOR: Let’s go easy on the euphoria. All those terrible things you hope will never happen again and all those glorious things we are assured are now in our bright and glowing future are not guaranteed by this one bizarre election.
Yes, the American people (around half) saw through the disgusting antics of the super rich, but let’s not go delusional. This was not the war to end all wars.
The bad guys were already hard at work the next morning.
They are hiring more MBAs from Harvard and Chicago and more lawyers from religious nut universities, creating new think tanks and planning how not to lose the next one.
For them, the prize is ownership and control of society and wealth, and that’s not a fight they will quit on.
We won this one because we were up against a force of plutocrats who were so arrogant they didn’t attempt to disguise their guiding philosophy.
We won against losers.
We didn’t win. They lost. A great number of “pro-Obama” votes were votes against the horrors of the Radical Right.
But “against” is not enough.
Unless we now can put together a true common philosophy and battle plan that will bring the people together in a positive movement, and unless we have true, effective leadership, we will be in another such war in the near future, and we can lose.
The true division remains.
Abraham Lincoln’s vision of government of, by and for the people is perpetually under attack. Don’t lay down you arms.
Don’t settle for an Obama who can win an election; demand he be a true leader in this second term.
If we settle for less, we will have won just a momentary victory.
Tell that to the president.
