Taxes
Forty-nine percent of the people pay no taxes? Children pay 0 (25 percent of the U.S. population). Most mentally disabled pay 0, most Alzheimer's victims pay 0, most severally handicapped people pay 0, most elderly people pay very little, most unemployed people pay 0, most severely disabled veterans pay 0, General Electric pays 0, Exxon Mobil pays 0. So you resent the fact that you are physically able to work, have a job, have a home and money in the bank? Want to switch places? Which of the above groups do you want to belong to?
Welfare
Watching the local news last night, there was a story about PEF voting down that ridiculous offer by the state. Then they say our leader makes a threat to PEF that they had better vote for his offer or layoffs will follow. How are you going to help the job crisis by laying off more workers, the ones who actually do the work and pay the most taxes? Want to save money? Get rid of all these kids running around with EBT cards. Welfare is killing the working people.
Thanks
Early evening while stopped at a very busy intersection in Cumberland Head, my vehicle suddenly stalled. I would like to thank the young lady, who was actually behind me, and the man who had the tow truck for all their help in assisting me quickly and safely off the road. Your time, caring and help was truly appreciated.
Cuts
As a former student at a local trade school, I am deeply hurt to see teachers who have changed so many lives getting their jobs taken from them. At the beginning of my second year, they took a chef who was passionate about teaching the world how to cook and passionate about his classroom and his kids. Now they are taking a teacher's aide job from a woman who brought laughter and joy to the classroom every day. It deeply saddens me to see jobs taken from hard-working, caring, compassionate teachers.
Women
To the people who elect athletes to the PHS Athletic Hall of Fame: Why no women this year?
Ramp
To the drivers entering Route 374 from the Route 3 on-ramp in Cadyville: You have a yield sign. You must prepare to stop if necessary to let a driver on another approach proceed. This means you don't speed up to try to cut traffic off. You don't beep your horn and gesture wildly. You're going to kill someone.
Zoning
Mooers: I notice many vacant buildings. Zoning does not help progress. It's good for new buildings, but existing buildings haven't a chance. Try to fix anything, a permit is needed. Engineers are required at double or triple the price of the repairs. Not enough space for a septic system, the old post office is doomed — another empty building. Time to change or omit the zoning law so people can fix the old.
Transportation
I agree with the article in today's paper that little is known to the public on how to use our public transportation, as I have tried to get schedules from drivers and was told that I'd have to go to the main hub to get one. Where is that? There should be schedules at the stop on Cornelia Street and in grocery stores etc. The stops should be obvious to everyone. I might use it if I knew how.
Pets
Are there any apartments that allow pets in the city of Plattsburgh? If you're out there, please advertise your properties. I am 29 years old, fiercely independent and now forced to live at home until I can find a place where I am allowed to have my cat. I don't want to be dishonest and sign a lease which specifies that I can't have my cat there, but at this point I don't see any other alternative. Landlords aren't willing to negotiate, and paying an extra $25 per month on top of $600 for one bedroom and one pet is ludicrous.
Strays
Help! Has anyone noticed the growing population of stray cats in the Buttonbrook area in Peru? We have a pregnant brown striped mother cat, two black-and-white kittens, a large black-and-white tom with one bent-over ear, two fluffy brown striped males around 1 year old and a small, short-haired black cat. The SPCA is overcrowded, and winter is coming. We need help. I feed them but have family members allergic to cats.
Public
What is with Peru Central School? I have a child in the Intermediate and High School buildings. First, the Intermediate cafeteria is closed due to mold and none of the air testing was released. What conditions were my child exposed too? Now there is a chemical spill in the High School and my other child sat in the building for five periods. This all comes on the heels of the superintendent scandal that nobody can talk to the public about. For being a public school, they seem to do a good job of leaving the public out.
Union
Congratulations to PEF members. You didn't buckle under the governor's threats.
Corporations
To all you who want to further tax the corporations, I'm going to educate you. The United States has just advanced to first place on the corporate tax rate: 35 percent. And what do you think the corporations do with this cost of doing business? They pass it on to you.
