CHEERS to John Kelley of Kelley’s Tree Service in Peru, who outdid himself in helping a helpless cat out of a tree. The cat had been stuck there for four days. Here’s an account from an interested person, Joannah Racine: “On a Sunday afternoon (Kelley) was called to help retrieve a cat from a tree, 60 feet up. This tree was in the middle of a field, and the route to get there prohibited most vehicles, including the fire department, from getting to the cat. Not only did Mr. Kelley stick around and help figure out a solution to get a family’s cat, but he drove his truck in the middle of a field, snow and all. Throughout the afternoon, there were constant barriers that prevented this from being an easy task. However, Mr. Kelley was extremely patient and even surveyed the land, trying to find a path to drive his 6-ton vehicle to the tree. He willingly risked driving his bucket truck off road and getting stuck to rescue a 16-year-old boy’s cat; and he only charged what he spent on gas to get there! His professionalism, kindness and eagerness to help out other people are rare characteristics. Thank you!” We hope people don’t swamp Kelley’s Tree Service with cat calls. After what he went through, he deserves a lot better than that. People love people who love animals.
JEERS to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), for what is reported to have been an unpleasant exchange with a flight attendant the other day. The source is Politico.com, the online version of a newspaper distributed in the Washington, D.C., area and regarded by capital insiders as a reliable organization. Politico got its information on this story from a Republican aide who claims to have witnessed an exchange between the senator and a flight attendant. According to Politico, Schumer was flying between New York and Washington with fellow New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Both were talking on cell phones as the plane was about to take off, and an announcement requested that all phones be shut off. Both senators continued talking. The flight attendant then told Schumer the entire plane was waiting for him to turn off his phone. He asked her if he could complete his call, and the attendant said no. He turned his phone off but argued he was entitled to keep talking until the cabin door was closed. The conversation between the two continued, and he reportedly called her a derogatory name typically used for persistent females. His spokesman told Politico Schumer regretted the remark. Schumer has been in the Press-Republican offices several times and has appeared affable and respectful, though he is tenacious in behalf of his constituents. We hope that if this account can be trusted, it is an aberration and not indicative of how he treats America’s rank and file.
