Speakout: Dec. 12, 2009

SPEAKOUT DELAYS

Speakout entries that are more than 100 words long will be rejected. Also, don't type all in capital letters and don't insult a specific person or use hateful language because those will be rejected also.

Please take a minute to proofread and spellcheck your entry before you send it. Look for spelling errors, grammar mistakes and words that should be capitalized but aren't.

It takes time to correct the many errors that arrive in Speakout entries, so it's a big help if you check them over first.

Students
Most school districts in the North Country have fewer students than even five years ago, and NAC is no exception. We have about 900 students compared to about 1,200 students just a few years ago. And the downward trend continues. Why are we being asked to build another gym, track and football field? It's time to stand together as NAC taxpayers and stop this. Vote no on December 14th!

District
The School Board and the superintendent at NACS need to put their brains together for the best interest of the district. Putting pork into a project isn't realistic nor is it showing responsible representation to the taxpayers. Necessary repairs should be done with the $28 million, cut out the Olympic-style fields, parking lots and $185,000 for a an old K of C building that's assessed at $35,000. Teachers need to stop harassing their students to tell their parents to vote yes for the project; that's coercion.

NACS
I have children that attend NAC. One is in an elementary classroom with duct tape stripes and squares of carpeting missing. She plays on a playground with parts missing and serious safety issues. My MS/HS son has a teacher that travels from room to room on a cart. If there were unused rooms, would this be happening? He had to play baseball in Lyon Mountain; our fields were too muddy. My nephew's play was canceled because stage rigging was unsafe. There is some fluff. But, with a no vote we lose all the much-needed repairs. Vote the facts not rumors.

Education
Northern Adirondack Central School is asking voters to approve a $35 million capital project, which will include a new football field (there is currently no football team), a new gym, 10 new classrooms at the high school (enrollment is dropping) and new administrative offices. How will spending this extraordinary amount of money improve the education of our children?
