Speakout: Dec. 1, 2009

SPEAKOUT RULES

Speakout entries that are more than 100 words long will be rejected. Also, don't type all in capital letters and don't insult a specific person or use hateful language because those will be rejected also.

Please take a minute to proofread and spellcheck your entry before you send it. Look for spelling errors, grammar mistakes and words that should be capitalized but aren't.

It takes time to correct the many errors that arrive in Speakout entries, so it's a big help if you check them over first.

Timing
Anyone else notice how the Pfizer announcement per the Rouses Point facility just happened to occur six days after the 2009 November Election Day?

Hunters
For the few duck hunters who cannot find a place to hunt except in front of people's homes, check out a map of Lake Champlain. Can you find Point au Roche State Park, Valcour Island, Ausable Point State Park, Ausable Point Marsh and Wickham Marsh? All prime waterfowl areas and no private residences. None of those mean, nasty homeowners to pick on you. Also, take a course on hunting ethics. A bit more challenging than the Hunter Safety course but you just might learn something about empathy and common sense.

No smoking
At the Government Center for business, I couldn't believe the smoking and cigarette butts by the rear/Court Street entrance. The sign may say leave 40 feet from the doors, but it needs to say off the entire property. The DMV clerk that had been puffing away served me pleasantly, but her hacking and nauseating cigarette aroma was, well... Do these employees toss their butts by their front stoop at home? We could blame the staff for not cleaning up, or blame passers by, but it's a problem our city fathers need to fix. No smoking at any public facility property.

Speeding
So I am on my way to work this morning, turning from Smithfield Boulevard, car right on my tail, slow down so he will get the hint to go around, finally goes around near Starbucks, and he turns into McDonalds. And the point of being on my tail was? What is wrong with people in this town? They get mad if you drive slow (which you are in the slow lane), then go around.

Illegal
Re: Season on Oct. 27. You are creative. Hunting is a granted privilege, and you aren't doing the landowner any favor by removing his deer, your personal thoughts to the contrary. Big-game hunters in general are unethical by the fact that they refuse to turn in their careless illegal hunting compatriots. If I read in the paper of one illegal deer hunter being turned in by another deer hunter I'll apologize for my last statement, but I won't hold my breath till that happens.

Dangerous
I recently attended parent/teacher conferences at NACS. Thank you to everyone who makes our children's lives so full and happy. As I crossed Route 11 on the way home I admired how beautiful our elementary school is both inside and out. Voters and architects need to look carefully at this before they change the front landscape into a giant drive thru and parking lot. This is already a dangerous intersection without putting another pull out at the intersection. There must be a better way to create a safe, secure entrance to our building. Read the fine print voters! Vote wisely!

Charge
Since Vermont says they can't afford to help with the Crown Point Bridge reconstruction and New York taxpayers have to foot the entire bill, any car with a green license plate crossing on the ferry being paid for by New York taxpayers should be charged $10 each way.

Shocked
I'm shocked to hear the county wants to bring in a different carrier and not renew Cape Air's contract. What do we call this people? "Shiny jet" syndrome. When you expand something too quick it always tends to fail. Prime example would be Big Sky airlines who expanded too quick and went out of business leaving Clinton County without service for weeks. Why fix something that is not broke? Cape Air has been doing an wonderful job on providing reliable service at great prices. Patience is a virtue.
