Hospital funding cuts dangerous

There is no denying the fact New York state faces unprecedented financial challenges. In order to meet budget obligations, wave after wave of deficit-reduction measures have swept across our region, threatening our key community institutions.

Adirondack Medical Center has a long tradition of providing health care to the Tri-Lakes region and beyond. As any business owner will tell you, operating a successful venture in our area depends on dedication to its mission, determination to see it through and creativity when the going gets tough. AMC is fortunate to have people who are truly dedicated, determined, and resourceful.

The reality remains, however, that repeated and frequent funding cuts compounded by a tax on every dollar of revenue generated at AMC have pushed the hospital, its long-term-care facilities, and health centers to a dangerous tipping point.

The governor is now proposing to cut funding to AMC by an additional $356,000 over the next 16 months. More astounding is his proposal to cut funding to AMC's long-term-care facilities by an additional $540,000 over the same time period! While AMC has depended on dedication, determination and creativity to provide new and much-needed programs and services, these proposed funding cuts are not only emotionally crippling for all health-care providers but also threaten to jeopardize the health and economic wellbeing of our community.

AMC and other health-care providers in our community have endured more than their fair share of the state's budget woes. Please contact our representatives in the Assembly and Senate and urge them to aggressively speak out on the behalf of all New York state communities that depend upon their hospitals and health-care systems for the care and support they deserve.

Emily L. Selleck is chair of the Adirondack Medical Center Board of Trustees.
