Sports
We must ensure a separation between competitive varsity sports and the county "all equal-all play" conversations that are going on. The county has established equal playing time for all regardless of skill. This is where there is some questionable coaching decisions and parental activities, such as lack of knowledge, degrading participants, favoritism and the ever-present yelling and now parental intimidation of opposing coaches and umpires. Local youth commissions need to seek out information regarding conduct during the season and use that for next year's coaching selections.
Fire truck
I would like to know if the person that's complaining about $300,000 fire trucks would be so quick to complain when their house burns and the local fire department showed up with a $25,000 truck that breaks down on the way to his house. You should be careful what you ask for; you may be the one getting bit. As for recognition, God bless all firefighters and EMS for your dedication.
Troopers
To the state troopers following 2 inches away from my back bumper at 6 a.m. on the highway near the Canadian border: Is 2 inches away from my car necessary? How about just pull me over and question me rather than make me wonder what kind of lunatic is following too closely in the dark? I tolerated that for five minutes while your headlights were blinding me. I am a nurse trying to get to work. I understand you have a job to do, but some things are not necessary.

Editorial: The real reason for the holiday
Today is for creating new memories. Tomorrow, we should pause to remember. Memorial Day weekend, being the first big holiday of the sun season, is all about barbecues, picnics and outdoor activities; it is all about family and friends. After a North Country winter, even a fairly mild one like we just had, we need to relax in the sun and enjoy the outdoors.

In My Opinion: Cultural issues need attention
Amid the various issues debated as we approach the next elections, two are important to all individuals here, as in the rest of the country: debates over birth control and over interest owed on student loans, writes Plattsburgh State professor Mark Cohen.
