TO THE EDITOR: The Town of Peru Justice Courts have been very active over the years, and the town has been fortunate in having had several experienced and qualified justices. John Lawliss is one of them.
John's law-enforcement career with the New York State Police took him from uniform trooper to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), to commissioned officer, through several special assignments throughout the state and on to Troop "B" commander, which is the rank of major. He also served a four-year term as Clinton County sheriff.
I have known John throughout his police career and his town justice service. He is fully
knowledgeable of criminal law and criminal procedure laws, as well as civil matters. While I am not a town of Peru resident, I highly recommend him for re-election. Vote for knowledge, ethics and experience. Vote for John Lawliss on Nov. 3.

TO THE EDITOR: It is not every day that a qualified young man steps up to meet the challenges of his community. This is one of those days. A lifelong resident of the town of Peru, Geoff Spear, is offering his services to his town as a councilman. He is running for the two years remaining in a term which is now vacant due to a resignation.
It is not as if Geoff has sat back and only watched what was happening in his community. He has a leadership position in the youth formation programs at the Peru Community Church. In addition to his position with the Plattsburgh State soccer program, Geoff has been instrumental in the formation and growth of youth soccer programs in Peru and Clinton County. His family has always been very involved in the community, including his parents, his wife and their four children.
Those who know Geoff will attest to his fair and unbiased appraisal of issues. Geoff somehow manages to find a well reasoned answer to the quandary whether it is an item critical to the town of Peru, a family development or a crucial time in a soccer match.
The Town of Peru should take advantage of Geoff's abilities. Support Geoff for the position of councilman.

Change or stay same?
TO THE EDITOR: Change or more of the same, is the question Peru voters are asking. Voters have many candidates to choose from.
For the supervisor position,ce give the voters the same two choices, more of the same or a change.
As the late Sen. Stafford would say, some of the voters are for change and some want to stay the same, I'm for the voters.
The question is, change or stay the same can be answered on Nov. 3, 2009, with the largest voters turn out in Peru's history.

TO THE EDITOR: Westport is fortunate this year in having three qualified candidates for the post of supervisor, including incumbent Dan Connell.
In an ordinary year, if there is ever such a thing, each one of them in my view, could handle the job and keep Westport functioning without too much excitement. But if that were the case, it would only be because incumbent Dan Connell has prepared a very solid base from which the other candidates could operate.
In his terms as supervisor, Dan Connell has directed the rehabilitation and delivery of the town water supply to meet new, stringent NYS requirements. He has truly supervised the reconstruction and repair of the waste water system from a state of legal jeopardy to its present safe and efficient level.
A smaller but important project was the conversion of the disused White Church to a visitor center, which coordinates the energies of the hospitality industry of our area. Streets and sidewalks in the hamlet are clean and in best condition.
While doing all this, Mr. Connell has expertly secured low-cost loans and grants that have kept Westport tax levels remarkably stable in view of the general inflationary impulse of recent years.
I think it's fair to say that Dan Connell has done a remarkable job of preparing the infrastructure of Westport for the tough times we all know are just ahead of us.
I have sat in on some of the negotiations for water and sewer and have been stunned by the level of frustration and complexity involved in bringing such projects to completion. It is clear to me that dealing with the fog of federal, state, county and Adirondack Park regulations is a full-time job that demands the full-time attention of a full-time experienced executive.
Dan Connell has clearly demonstrated that he can do the job. The proof is there whenever we turn a faucet or flush a toilet, and there are still jobs to be done!
Please take a look around Westport on Election Day and then vote for Dan Connell for supervisor.

TO THE EDITOR: I would like to express my support for Susan Polhemus for a position on the Peru Town Board. Sue worked for the Town of Peru for several years while I was town supervisor.
Sue was always willing to perform any tasks that were needed. She was a team player and always willing to assist anyone. Sue is very knowledgeable of state and town laws and is well qualified for a seat on the Town Board.
Sue will be ready for the challenge on day one.
