Schools
I can't believe Saranac School Board. $17.5 million in renovations. Whose brainstorm was this? Like the taxpayers really want an increase in their taxes. What about Cadyville and Dannemora schools? If they sell these two schools, where is the money going? I haven't heard about any plans for that. Maybe it can go to the upkeep for the schools they have opened instead of burdening the taxpayers. I get the feeling not everything is being disclosed. I'm voting no!
Saranac
Saranac voters, vote yes! I wrote to Speakout a week or two ago saying this spending that is up for a vote is frivolous, wasteful and unnecessary. I went to the public information meeting and found that I was wrong. The idea is well thought out, and Mr. Cringle did an excellent job of explaining it. I will vote yes and urge others to do the same.
Expansion
As parents of kids who attended Cadyville School, we stood before the Saranac School Board four years ago and told them closing the school is a mistake and that census numbers indicated that within five years they would need to re-open. Now here we go with a $17.5 million expansion. Taxes will go up, there is no state aide. Vote no and upgrade the two buildings that exist that never should have been closed in the first place.
Project
Whatever type of smokescreens that the Saranac School Board and its leader are trying to pull with a $17.5 million project, please say no on Feb. 9. Taxes will in fact be affected, there is no way to prevent this. They will have you believe it needs to happen now. They should have thought farther ahead and kept the buildings they had. A new fancy district office is at the top of this pile; that's what the leader wanted to begin with. Taxpayers are tapped out; there is no more money to be squeezed out of the well.
Overspending
Saranac School Board and Mr. Cringle need to keep in mind that not all taxpayers in the district are fools. We are not going to sit by idle and watch you overspend, over-tax and over-budget. We need to vote no to a school project that is way over what the taxpayers can afford. Did you realize there are jobs being lost every day, and that means no money. You need to realize that the taxpayers are not all as wealthy and cushioned as you, Mr. Cringle.
Medicine
What ever happened to the good 'ole days, when instead of getting or taking pharmaceuticals, we got cod liver oil?
Sidewalks
As a taxpayer in Plattsburgh and an outdoor runner, I am appalled at the lack of responsibility displayed by homeowners, landlords, businesses and organizations in regard to sidewalks during inclement weather. Please keep your sidewalks free from snow and ice during the season to ensure the safety of others.
Parking
What gives a local downtown business the right to park on both sides of a street, virtually making it a one-way and blocking the view of oncoming traffic? Not only is it hazardous for other vehicles, but for pedestrians trying to cross and emergency vehicles. Every day trucks, vans and cars are parked from sunup until sundown on the beginning of the street. Either find a larger place for your business, or park in the city parking lot and walk like the rest of us.
Insurance
Another renter loses everything in a fire and has no insurance! Unbelievable! I am an insurance agent, and for $10-$20 a month, anyone can buy renters insurance to cover their personal property. In most cases, it also gives you coverage for the landlord's damage if you're responsible for the fire, and it will pay for a place to stay while you find another home. Before buying expensive pets, cigarettes or beer, buy some insurance!
Inconsiderate
Shop locally? Why should I? On a typical day I have to drive to Plattsburgh and contend with the rude drivers and inconsiderate people in the parking lot or no parking at all. Then, the employees in the stores are busy talking about their social lives and ignoring customers. Then if I want to stop for lunch, try to get quick, courteous service in a local restaurant! They act like they are doing you a favor by serving you! If this community wants us to shop locally then maybe they should ask themselves why so many prefer not to.

Editorial: The real reason for the holiday
Today is for creating new memories. Tomorrow, we should pause to remember. Memorial Day weekend, being the first big holiday of the sun season, is all about barbecues, picnics and outdoor activities; it is all about family and friends. After a North Country winter, even a fairly mild one like we just had, we need to relax in the sun and enjoy the outdoors.
