Dinner to support kids programs
CHAMPLAIN — The Rouses Point-Champlain Kiwanis Club has recently become sponsor for the Key Club for high-school students at Northern Adirondack Central School.
Fulfilling the volunteer service organization's international motto of "Serving the children of the world one child and one community at a time," the Northern Tier club also sponsors Key Clubs at Northeastern Clinton Central School in Champlain and Chazy Central Rural School. For middle schoolers, there's a Builders Club at NCCS and, at NACS, NCCS and CCRS, elementary-school students participate in K-Kids clubs. And there's an Aktion Club for disabled adults through Champlain Valley Industries.
As young club members, said Rouses Point-Champlain Club Vice President Linda Gonyo-Horne, "the kids learn that they're members of the community and they need to give back."
Community services projects undertaken by the clubs for young people have included roadside cleanups, collecting coats for the needy and nursing-home visits. The kids also show their patriotism by raising the flag at their respective schools and in other ways.
Kiwanis will raise money to help support the kids programs with a Valentine's Day chicken-and-biscuits dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Oak Street, Champlain. Cost is $8 for adults; $5 for ages 5 through 12; and free for under 5. Takeout is available starting at 4 p.m.
School principals offices have information for kids interested in joining clubs. The Rouses Point-Champlain group meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month at Lakeside Coffee in Rouses Point. For more information, call Bryan Moore at 298-5568.
