Anti-slavery marker dedication planned
PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh's first interpretive panel celebrating the anti-slavery movement will be dedicated at 5 p.m. Feb. 16 in front of the main entrance to the First Presbyterian Church at 34 Brinkerhoff St.

Interim pastor Virginia Murray and North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association President Don Papson will be joined by members of the church and the association.

The panel is one of a series of state-funded markers on New York's Underground Railroad Heritage Trail. The North Country has three others — at the John Brown Farm in North Elba, the Essex County Courthouse and the First Congregational Church in Malone.

Following the unveiling of the interpretive panel, members of the board and Steering Committee of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association will hold their regular monthly meeting in the church.

The public is invited to both events.

Good Thief Church wins YouTube attention
DANNEMORA — Prison church documentary popular on YouTube.

The award-winning short documentary "Church of the Good Thief" is now averaging 400 views daily on YouTube.

Mike Raab, of North Carolina produced the film about the chapel on the grounds of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. Church of the Good Thief was the first freestanding church built inside a prison in the United States.

"After it was screened at several film festivals in 2008 and won a few awards, I decided to put it up on YouTube" said Raab, whose wife, Barbara, is a Dannemora native. "It went up April 28 of 2009, and from then until Dec. 18, it received 426 views."

Then, he said, "viewership took off. I thought it might have been because it was during the holidays and 'church' does have an uplifting theme to it."

However, the numbers continued through January and, in six weeks, it had 11,000 views.

"I'm truly amazed," Raab said.
