Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

Winter ArtQuest series available for children over break

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is offering a Winter ArtQuest series for children during the upcoming school recess from Feb. 20 through 24.

The series, themed "Hands-On History," aims to give students the opportunity to learn about cultural and historical aspects of specific art objects and to create their own versions. Activities are age-specific and include jewelry making, totem-pole construction, origami and more. Classes are from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 5 to 8, and from 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 9 to 12.

NCCCA offering pottery sessions

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is offering two "Try It!" classes for those interested in pottery.

Classes are from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 18 and 25.

For $25, participants can spend two hours giving the potter's wheel a spin. NCCCA supplies materials, basic instruction and hands-on assistance. If participants decide to register for the next session of classes, the "Try It!" cost will be put toward the class registration fee.

Writing center seeks submissions for Literary Awards

PAUL SMITHS — The Adirondack Center for Writing is looking for submissions of fiction, poetry, children's literature, memoir, nonfiction and photography published any time in 2011 for its annual Adirondack Literary Awards.

The Literacy Awards is a way to honor the writers who live and work (even part-time) in the North Country. Submissions don't have to be Adirondack-themed, though they can be. Applicants should send two copies of work for reading before March 5 to Adirondack Center for Writing, Paul Smith's College, P.O. Box 265, Paul Smiths, NY 12970.

Submissions will be read by a genre-specific panel of judges. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Blue Mountain Center.
