for exhibit
PLATTSBURGH — Sponsors are sought to underwrite an exhibit about women in the War of 1812 that will open at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association's War of 1812 Museum in late spring.
Donations are tax deductible for the show, which features stories that capture the spirit and courage of women in the early 1800s. Sponsors' names will be listed on a plaque at the entrance to the exhibit.
Send contributions to the Battle of Plattsburgh Association, attention Kristina Parker-Wingler, before April 30.

Film produced
to reach teens
PLATTSBURGH — Indie film "To Save A Life" has been held over at Cumberland 12 in Plattsburgh this week, with showings at 7 and 9:40 p.m. nightly.
"'To Save a Life' is a project inspired by a passion to reach teenagers with life-affirming entertainment — the kind of movie educators, youth workers, parents and student leaders can get behind," said Jared Hogle, a teacher at Plattsburgh High School.
The film focuses on such themes as suicide, underage drinking, teen pregnancy, divorce, acceptance and more.
"In other cities across the U.S., public schools have been busing their entire school to see this film," Hogle said, encouraging teens and families to see it.
Carving class offered
CANTON — Woodcarver Ron Riley will offer a three-session carving class at the Traditional Arts in Upstate New York Center, 53 Main St., from 10 a.m. to noon March 13, April 10 and May 8.
Participants will carve their own small wooden village.
The cost is $15 per class for Traditional Arts members and $20 for nonmembers; all materials will be provided.

Music scholarship available
PLATTSBURGH — The Kiwanis Club of Plattsburgh invites applications for its $500 Grace Belden Music Scholarship.
Named for Grace Belden, who shared her piano expertise with the Kiwanis Club for many years, the scholarship will be awarded to a high-school senior accepted into a music program at a four-year college or a current college student majoring in music.

Mardi Gras
seats available
LAKE PLACID — Tickets are available now for Mardi Gras Night at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.
The family event, with reserve seating only, features Terrance Simien and The Zydeco Experience at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21. Tickets are $16 with a $3 discount for skiers who show their Whiteface Mountain lift ticket. Those who bring their concert ticket to Whiteface will save $21 off a lift ticket for this season.

Auditions set for 'Blues in the Night'
ESSEX — Essex Theatre Company will hold auditions for Sheldon Epps's musical review "Blues in the Night" from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 20, and Sunday, March 21, at the Community Church in Essex.
The cast is three women: The Lady, The Woman and The Girl; and The Man, who is a snake of a guy. The work features the blues melodies of Bessie Smith, Jimmy Cox, Alberta Hunter and others.
Rehearsals will begin May 23, continuing from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. three times weekly.
Performances will be 7:30 p.m. July 9, 10, 15, 16; and 5 p.m. July 17 and 18 at the Masonic Lodge in Essex.
Those auditioning should be prepared to sing two songs (bring an extra copy for the accompanist, if possible). Call Kathy Poppino at 374-5410 to arrange another audition time should that weekend not suit.
Chorale seeks
new members
TICONDEROGA — It's not too late to join the Champlain Valley Chorale, which has resumed rehearsals for its spring concerts planned for early June.
Weekly rehearsals are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays in the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 1045 Wicker St., Ticonderoga.
No audition is required.

Meadowmount names interim director
WESTPORT — The Meadowmount School of Music has appointed Eric Larsen its interim director for the 2010 season.
He has been the director of the piano program at Meadowmount since 1991 and performs with the Meadowmount Trio. Currently on the artist faculty, he is chair of the piano area at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has performed in major concert halls in Europe, South America, Russia, Asia and the United States.

Grant winners announced
WESTPORT — Recipients have been chosen for Round 2 of the Strategic Opportunity Stipend (S.O.S.) Grant program administered through the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks.
The grants, of between $100 and $600 each, help "individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career development," a press release said. The next deadline is May..

Ti Guild schedules summer events
TICONDEROGA — Age and vandalism have ended use of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild tent and stage, but programs remain healthy and active.
Here are some details of the 2010 schedule, with most events taking place at the Knights of Columbus Pavilion behind the K of C hall on Montcalm Street.
The Tuesday concert season opens July 6 with Towne Meeting; July 13 is Woods Tea Company; the Hague Jazz Quartet is July 20; Adrenaline Hayride performs July 27; Vickie Russell, Aug. 3; and the Ticonderoga Community Band, Aug. 10. Concerts are at 8 p.m.; general admission is $10, $5 for students.
Other events will include the children's program Arts Trek XXVII at 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays beginning July 7; Aug. 14, Kitty Jones will hold a "Mother Earth" workshop at the Heritage Museum; the Seagle Colony will present its 2010 children's opera, "Jack and the Beanstalk," July 21; Peco Bill's Wild West Show is July 28; Aug. 4 is ventriloquist Sylvia; and Tom Hanford will bring Old Colony Days to life Aug. 11 with historical stories.
An open mike night is scheduled tentatively for July 29, when locals are invited to show off their talents.
