Auditions set for 'The Sound of Music'
LAKE PLACID — The Community Theatre Players will hold auditions for the spring production "The Sound of Music" from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in the Silkscreen Studio of Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

Participants will be expected to sing one selection in the style of the show without accompaniment or with a self-provided karaoke track. They are asked to wear comfortable clothes and to use the studio entrance in the rear of the building.

Matt Sorensen is director of the production, which will be performed May 21, 22, 28 and 29.

Poetry Contest deadline Feb. 28
LAKE PLACID — The entry deadline is Feb. 28 for the 2010 Great Adirondack Young People's Poetry contest, open to grades one through 12 in the Adirondack region.

Area schools have information available about entering the contest, which has been held by the Lake Placid Institute for the Arts and Humanities since 1998.

The winning poems will be published in a book and listed on the Institute's Web site. Three winners will be awarded scholarships to the 2010 Young Vermont Writers' Conference in May.

This contest is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Lake Placid Education Foundation, Corning-Chisolm Foundation through Adirondack Community Trust, the Arts Council of Northern Adirondacks and Stewart's Shops.

Create art
for the birds

PLATTSBURGH — Local artisans are invited to submit creative birdhouses, birdbaths and bird feeders for the Friends of the Plattsburgh Public Library's upcoming fundraiser "Feathered Friends," set to run April 7 through May 6 at the library.

Either build or buy the bird-related items and then decorate them, a press release said. Entries are due by April 6 at Plattsburgh Public Library.

All proceeds will be used in support of the library.

Buy carnival
photos online

SARANAC — The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival photos can now be purchased online.

"We have tried for years to find ways to improve the availability of our Winter Carnival photographs," said Jeff Dickson, chairman of the Winter Carnival Committee. "Now, with our enhanced Web site and using the Web site from Shutterfly, we can reach a larger audience and provide the convenience of on-line ordering.

Available following this year's carnival will be all the photos that will be shown in the 2010 Slide Show during the closing ceremonies.

Other photos from the carnival will offered, too, said official photographer Mark Kurtz in a press release.

Grants available to Essex Co. groups
WESTPORT — The deadline is Friday, March 26, to apply for 2010 Cultural Assistance Program (CAP) Grants that are available to nonprofit organizations that provide cultural programming in Essex County.

Any arts, historical, preservation or library association, museum or other non

profit organization that is a member of the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks and provides a cultural enrichment program for Essex County residents may apply.

Applicants may join the council before the grant deadline to become eligible.

Gift to help renovate heritage center
CANTON — SeaComm Federal Credit Union has announced a gift of $5,000 to help renovate the new heritage center at Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, located at 53 Main St., Canton.

The funds will go to Traditional Arts' $1.25 million Evergreen Campaign.

Education/arts funding awarded
WESTPORT — The Adirondack Arts in Education Partnership has announced the recipients for the 2010 Local Capacity Building Arts in Education Regrant Program.

The funding will be used to support partnerships between North Country schools and local teaching artists or cultural organizations that focus on the integrated study of the arts and non-arts subjects.

Here are the partnerships that will take place this spring:

Cumberland Head Elementary School and visual artist Bucky Seiden; Lake Placid Elementary School's fourth grade and theater artist Lindsay Pontius; Long Lake Central School, Sunmount Day Treatment and Rehabilitation Center and Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts; Northern Adirondack Central School and visual artist Sue Young; St. Mary's School, Ticonderoga, and Joe Vilardo, architect and designer; Westport Central School and teaching artist Elizabeth Lee.

The Education Partnership is a program of the Depot Theatre in Westport and is supported with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Hildreth work
Best in Show

PAUL SMITHS — "Diversity with Harmony" by Sandra Hildreth was named Best in Show in the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks and Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Centers' 20th-annual Artistic Interpretations of the Environment Juried Art Show: "Discovering Diversity."

First-place winners are: "Between the Trees" by Annoel Krider, for 2-13 Media; and "Magic Carpet" by Karla Brieant, in the photography category.

Twenty-two pieces, listed under Events at www.artsnorth.org, were chosen from among 60 entries and are now on display in the Paul Smiths Visitor Center Sun Space Gallery.

Jurors were Linda Smyth and Hillary Smith. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until Feb. 16.

Grant to put old news online
BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake has received a $4,253 grant from the New York Newspaper Foundation in support of microfilm services in the museum's research library.

According to librarian Jerry Pepper, the funds will underwrite the partial cost of preserving 12 newspapers published in the Adirondack Park over the next two years.

Assistance with preparation and submission of the grant proposal came from John Hammond, director of the Northern New York Library Network; and Catherine Moore, publisher of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
