Training set for Friendship Volunteer program
LAKE PLACID — Mercy Care for the Adirondacks commissioned six new friendship volunteers Jan. 21 in Saranac Lake.

The Mercy Care Friendship Volunteer program extends friendship, companionship and a helping hand to elders living independently. The volunteers serve as their advocates and help them stay connected to their communities.

Mercy Care has recruited and trained 53 friendship volunteers in the Tri-Lakes since January 2008. The next Friendship Volunteer training classes will take place March 9 and 16 in Tupper Lake. Training includes Physical Fitness for Older Adults, Community Resources, Spiritual Care, the Elder and the Family Perspective and other topics.

To sign up for the free eight-hour training, call Sheila Schneck, Mercy Care's office manager, at 523-5580.

Caregiver group
to meet Feb. 11

PLATTSBURGH — A discussion group for all unpaid caregivers is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the United Way Building, 45 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh.

The group, offered by the Caregiver Resource Center/Respite Program, is open to anyone providing unpaid care to an aging family member or friend. New participants are welcome.
