Canton talk focuses on Amish quilts, quilters

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York's "Folk Art in the Afternoon" series will begin with a look at Amish quilts and quilters.

The Wednesday afternoon series will explore the art and artists showcased in TAUNY's current exhibit, "Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life."

Betsy Tisdale will present an informal illustrated talk about Amish quilting and the role it plays in Amish families and North Country life from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the TAUNY Center, 53 Main St., Canton.

Amish women and girls in the ultra-conservative Swartzentruber Amish communities in the Depeyster, Heuvelton and Nicholville areas of St. Lawrence County make quilts in traditional patterns for family and for sale. Tisdale has collected and sold quilts made by Amish women in that area since the early days of their community settlements. A photographer and author, Tisdale makes regular visits to Amish homes, where she observes the women in their daily activities, especially quilt making.

The program will include tea, coffee and light refreshments.
