ELIZABETHTOWN — Two Lake Placid residents were charged with felony welfare fraud.
Gregg Staves, 37, and Gwendolyn Staves, 41, were both charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, both felonies, according to a press release from the Essex County Department of Social Services Welfare Fraud Unit.
Gregg and Gwendolyn allegedly failed to report employment and wages to Social Services and, as a result, they received $2,140,75 in benefits to which they were not entitled, according to the release.
On March 2, the two were served a criminal summons by the Essex County Sheriff’s Department to appear in Elizabethtown Town Court on March 21 to face the charges.
