Police Log: July 13, 2012 — Felony arrest

CHAZY — A Vermont man was arrested at the port of entry in Champlain.

Chazy-based State Police said John R. Hughes, 39, of Waterbury was brought to the port by Canadian authorities at about 2 a.m. July 10 after they notified U.S. Customs and Border Protection Patrol agents that Hughes was in their custody.

Police said they later contacted the Los Angeles Police Department and were able to confirm that Hughes had an active warrant out for his arrest. The police report did not specify why the warrant was issued.

He was charged with being a fugitive of justice, a class E felony, police said.

Hughes was arraigned in the Village of Rouses Point and was remanded to Clinton County Jail until his extradition hearing. A date for that hearing was not available, but police said it usually occurs within a matter of days following an arraignment.
