PERU — A fallen tree blocked traffic on Military Turnpike in the Town of Peru.
Faye Lawrence of Bill’s Body Shop called 911 after the tree fell shortly before 3 p.m. She said the tree, about 500 yards north of the business at 390 Military Turnpike, was blocking both lanes of traffic, and she called to alert emergency responders to the situation.
Lawrence said a neighbor was at the location to alert motorists to the blockage.
EMS Captain Cher Kirby of the Peru Volunteer Fire Department said the tree fell because it was rotten. It took six people from the fire department along with assistance from the Town of Peru Highway Department less than 45 minutes to clear the roadway.
The fire department was back in service at about 3:10 p.m., Kirby said.
