FIRE

LAKE PLACID -- Firefighters were able to save a home on Peninsula Way in Lake Placid Saturday, though flames caused extensive damage to the home's roof.

The Lake Placid Fire Department received a call around 2 p.m. that people on Lake Placid had seen fire on the roof of a building at the end of the peninsula at Sunny Cove. When firefighters arrived, they found the roof was indeed ablaze.

"We wanted to bring the fire boat in, but the water was too shallow and too rocky," said Fire Chief Jim Wasson. "We had to call in for the tanker task force to make sure we had enough water."

Firefighters worked quickly to douse the flames and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the house, owned by Winnie and Stephanie Holderied.

Fire investigators believe the fire was started when embers from a chimney landed on the home's cedar-shingle roof.

Although he did not have an estimate, Wasson said there was extensive damage to the roof, which would need repairs for the home to be habitable.

Fire departments from Saranac Lake, Wilmington, Keene and Keene Valley assisted in the call. Besides the lengthy stretch down Peninsula Way, firefighters had no other problems extinguishing the blaze. Neither the residents nor any firefighters were hurt.

Lake Placid was back at the station by 6 p.m.



PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENT

MALONE -- An Owls Head resident was injured while driving a moped Saturday.

According to State Police at Malone, Thomas Garland, 59, was driving on a trail near County Route 26 in the Town of Duane when he was unable to keep the moped upright and tipped over. He suffered a strained knee and was transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center where he was treated and released.

No tickets were issued.
