Don and Marlene Sabin celebrated their 60th anniversary June 1, 2012. On June 8, a renewal of their vows was performed by the Rev. Douglas Decker, pastor.
Donald J. Sabin and Marlene C. LaPorte were married June 1, 1952, in Tupper Lake by Monsignor Brault.
Don is an alumna of LeMoyne College in Syracuse. He spent his career in the labor movement, serving first as a business manager. In 1969, he was appointed as an international representative and assigned to the main office in Washington, D.C., as an assistant to the international president of the I.B.E.W.
After being a homemaker for more than 20 years, Marlene returned to the workforce and became a pension analyst. During this period, she became interested in union activities and was elected the shop stewardess for more than 200 office and professional employees.
They both retired in the spring of 1992 and returned to Tupper Lake. After Don enjoyed several years of serious skiing at Big Tupper, they decided to spend their winters in Port Charlotte, Fla., where they have their second home.
They have six children: Michael, Lynn, Katherine, Diane, John and Paul. They also have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In celebration of their 60th anniversary, the couple will be visiting Paris and London and enjoying a river cruise on the Seine, including stops at the historic D-Day landmarks in Normandy.
