Army Reserve Pvt. Brandon M. Darrah has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Robert and Lynn Darrah of Cadyville and is a 2007 graduate of Saranac Central High School,
Army Sgt. 1st Class Rob J. Schwartz has returned to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., after being deployed to Iraq serving in support of Operation New Dawn. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces were also assisting in rebuilding Iraq's economic and governmental infrastructure and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and independence as a democracy. Schwartz, a resident of Keeseville, is a combat engineer and operations sergeant with the 391st Engineer Company, Boise, Idaho. He has 32 years of military service.
The following Air Force airmen have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Force Base, San Antonio, Texas: Devan J. Durkee, son of Pamela Rosier of Brushton, who is a 2011 graduate of Brushton-Moira Central School; and Daniel R. TeBeau, son of Judy TeBeau of Owls Head, who is a 2010 graduate of Franklin Academy, Malone.
Maxx D. Hipko, a senior from Mooers Forks, was among the 506 cadets who were named to the Dean's List for the first semester of academic year 2011-12 at Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. Hipko, a senior, is majoring in international studies. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Erik H. Hipko.
Congressman Bill Owens has nominated the following individuals to their respective academies: Matthew Miller of Plattsburgh, U.S. Military Academy; Barrett Waling of Plattsburgh, Douglas Fitzgerald of Malone and MaryCatherine Murphy of Plattsburgh, U.S. Naval Academy; and Joseph Tobin of Cadyville and Agustine Rietsema of Plattsburgh, U.S. Air Force.
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has nominated Charles Simpson of West Chazy to the U.S. Naval Academy.
